Another anticipated interview by vf members from gothic_international cult. Enjoy!

Is there a meaning behind your Dj name?
Malkavians are a Clan of vampires in the Vampire: the Masquerade roleplaying game. They're all insane, which made them an early favorite to a weird kid. So Malkavian first became my alias on online Goth/Wave/Industrial communities, after that my DJ name.

How long have you been spinning?
Must be around a decade now.

Do you like Mermaids? Or Dragons?
Dragons definitely. I was a huge fantasy geek back in my teens and what creature personifies the genre more? I'm not much of a sea person either, except when it comes to food.

Do you have a go-to set list? What's the first three on it?
I have a number of favored songs, but no go-to starters. But three songs you'll find in almost all of my sets in recent years are "You'll End Up Like The Scary Bitches" by Scary Bitches, "The Broken Ones" by Diva Destruction and "Totally Tot" by Lebanon Hanover.

What kind of music do you spin?
Gothic is at its core, especially Deathrock. But I branch out most of my sets to other Postpunk, Darkwave, New Wave and always some EBM, Industrial Rock and Dark Folk.

You run Gothic international; tell us about why you started it? And how long has G_I (Gothic_International) been around?
I think it started out in late 2006, maybe 2007. I hadn't been a VF member all that long yet. But I was dissatisfied with the existing goth cults. None were all that big or active. And quite a few confused the greater Dark scene with my favorite genre/subculture withing; Goth. So I started my own and after a lot of invites we became the biggest most active Goth cult on VF.

What were the last three books you read? Do you have any favorites or recommendations?
Not counting comics, the last three are:
-The Disaster Artist (About the making of The Room.)
-Het Leven Is Kak. En Dan Wordt Het Grappig. (Translates to "Life is shit. And then it becomes funny". Memoirs of Belgian comedian Xander de Rycke.
-The Lasombra trilogy (Vampire: the Masquerade novels series.)

Of those I especially liked The Disaster Artist, but Neuromancer, Neverwhere, A Dance of Dragons and Anno Dracula are some favorites too.

So we know you DJ, but tell us what other things you enjoy? Anything you're passionate about?
Mostly I just enjoy the Goth/Wave/Industrial scene as a patron. I go out pretty much every weekend. And I was a geek before I was a Goth, so there's quite a bit I like within the realm of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. Mostly just watching and reading, but I'm into tabletop roleplaying too.

When are your next Dj gigs?
That would be Dance In Darkness, the 4th of August in Antwerp. The after party of Batjunk, my Dark scene flea market.

You're a big movie buff, tell us about the movies you like the most. And if you have any recommendations?
First and foremost is the original "Star Wars" trilogy, it awakened my geekdom as a kid. I also recommend "Cloud Atlas", the best movie hardly anyone has seen. And "The World's End", not only an amazing comedy. But the Gothness of the main character made him that much more identifiable.

Dead Bettie: "Cloud Atlas" is such a good book and the movie was great too!

People want to know; what do you love about djing?
Being responsible for people's good time and enjoyment. Especially if I can fill a dancefloor with a song you otherwise hardly ever hear.

Tell us about your vampire thing? What is your reasoning for liking them, it's cliche but everyone has to admit they like something cliche am I right?
It's a childhood fascination, not sure where exactly it started for me. But it certainly helped our local library was stocked with a few great vampire books for kids. And it was vampires that first led me to Goth. It exposed me to Bauhaus' song Bela Lugosi's Dead.
But it is indeed no more than a cliche. The number of Goth songs about vampires is actually pretty small. I made a playlist of them on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLX0Iohep8oKHx6HgHGVLuc33Rl2qK17hd) cause it was actually a challenge to do so.

Dead Bettie: Agreed! Thanks for sharing your YouTube playlists with us

What is something you are extremely passionate about? Or do you have anything you feel so strongly about you would fight for it?
A better world, one of maximum freedom and prosperity for all. People should fight for that, but then they'll need to be stronger than me. There was a time I was a card-carrying Communist (don't worry I always hated Stalin and Mao too), but since I've left politics mostly behind me. Bums me out too much, these days. I just stay informed and always show up to vote

Last question; we'll sort of. Leave us with a quote:
“Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess.”
― Oscar Wilde

Great interview! Thanks for sharing! I also agree that "Cloud Atlas" is an amazing movie. I've yet to read the book though.
