Why do people rely on strangers to tell them who they are? [Featured Site Content]

After a year of YouTubing I've found myself in a odd situation. On a daily basis, people were coming to me to find out whether they're a goth or not. This baffled me. How do you not know?! I didn't know how to react to that - Firstly, who the hell am I? It's not for me to tell you who you are. That's something you find on your journey. In addition to that, I came of age during a time where there was never a question as to who you were or where you stood. You had your ground and your heels dug firmly in place and could say 'I don't subscribe to any labels!' or 'I'm a Punk - Through and though!' or 'I'm Goth'. Either way, we found out through navigating through the natural course of life. Meeting people, going to shows, going to clubs, leafing through flyers for events, discovering new music and finding our sound and not once did we feel the need to ask because there was nothing there to confuse us or lead us astray. Not like today that is. So, I never answered the question.

So finally, after much prodding and kind of losing my shit as per protocol with me it seems as I approached my breaking point, I decided to address it...In a 17 minute long video. The first part of it replying to a video by SnowyLowther where I could address the parts of her video that I disagreed with, the second part reacting to the general state of social media and the cause for confusion. If you've got time to kill, this is a video that spawned like 20 response videos and pissed a lot of people.

I'm puzzled why people are so concerned with labels.

Depends on the person, take sociology or soicial psychology and things like culture, what humans tend to do in the presence of others, things like culture code, fitting in, the fear of being exiled, the emotions that go along with that.

Every person is different I think some people find a sense of belonging in culture (sub cultures) as much as someone in religion finds a place that might accept them or someone who took up a hobby in a bad neighborhood saved their life and gave them a sense of community/security.

When it comes to goth and it's subculture (culture, ethos, customs, etc) and people who do label themselves, I think it's more for a sense of belonging and finding a identity they can express themselves through.

But like I said everyone is different. I think what really matters that whomever it is and whatever they decide to "label" themselves as or identify as, or not to, gives them a positive outcome for their lives.

This has to be one of my favorite videos of you and was so sad alot of people totally missed the point. Even living in the south with none around to share the same personal preferences nothing ever made me doubt myself even once nothing stopped me from continuing my journey, The concept of fitting in has always been horrifying.

I love being able to stand up for the creature I have become. You don't need to have validation for your own self worth, or even on a shallow level..in the end the only opinion that should matter is your own.
And lastly, why label shit?

Validation.
Which you will never get if you rely on others for it.

It's great to see so-called "elitists" (and I have been labeled one myself) striking back and reclaiming our culture!
