This is also where I see beauty in anarchism...we can debate and bicker back and forth (we meaning people in general), but anarchism is the only social structure/order/whatever which gives everyone a voice. So, where as people may argue in favor of authoritarian government (which includes our "representative" democracy), their arguments and opinions don't really have an effect on anything. It is inclusive, rather than exlusive, and more importantly, as society begins to shift more people will become involved, making it all the more necessary to remain open to an increased number of concerns, opinions and ideas.
The concept of ultra-individualism, as in everyone being their own separate "atom" in society, merely bumping into others by coincedence, sort of strikes a bad note for me. I don't see that as necessarily being freedom, and I think that such notions are a result of a hierarchical perception of the world to begin with. What I see as an alternative is the realization along the lines of the indiginous belief, "the earth does not belong to us, we belong to the earth; we do not weave the web of life, we are merely strands in it...." With freedom, there is responsibility, and to deny this is a recipe for disaster. To put it in terms of what is currently the US government, not only would their be "freedom of speech, " but also a responsibility to listen. To only focus on our freedoms, while neglecting our responsibilities, it is as if we deny our place on this planet as products of nature and as social animals, by placing ourselves as the rulers of all (often under an ultimate god whose image we were "created" in) as a result of our ignorance.
One key point people always bring up, against the concept of anarchism, is "human nature." First of all, I don't believe we can accurately judge our nature in regards to "good" and "evil, " and I refuse to believe that all actions must fall somewhere on either side of some mysterious line of absolute. To quickly touch on "crime, " I would first point out that it is generally observed that all crime comes from the lower class (which has racist and classist connotations). What many do not acknowledge is that such a lower class exists in its limited, oppressed and often exploited conditions as a result of an initial injustice, which is most often the thievery, the greed, and the violence of the ruling class. Would I expect all selfishness, greed, fighting and stealing to come to an end with the elimination of our current social order? No, however, I would not expect anyone to be capable of denying that it would eliminate the process of rewarding the most corrupt and vicious with positions of privilege and power. In this way, our current social order rewards, and therefore encourages, the harmful tendencies of humans. I would not be so quick to consider all selfish behavior as being negative, acknowledging the notion that you can not help someone else if you can not first help yourself.
The last point I will make: anarchy is not chaos, at least not in a negative way. As has been posted, it is the absence of hierarchy in society. Chaos is not always a bad thing, it is pretty much the law of nature, and a certain degree of political "chaos" renders society as being capable of acting on problems according to the current conditions. Of course, it would not be as if everyone would scratch all historic knowledge, but it would allow for the collaboration of tradition and modern conditions to a much greater degree, especially as positions of power and self-interest (hierarchy) no longer exist as they do now. Rather than maintain the process of extracting and separating the governmental/economic aspects of society from the majority of the individuals in society as well as from eachother, both would be brought together under the control of the people. It has been my observation that to extract and sever these social forces is impossible to maintain for any significant period of time. The two (government/economic) are so closely related, and overlap in many ways in society, that it is inevitable for one to influence the other, and vice versa. As has been seen in history, centralizing government power results in the taking over of economic conditions, and, perhaps by a more complex process, as the economy becomes centralized (conglomerates, MNCs, etc.), the government becomes privatized as a vehicle for the perpetuation of the higher-class interests. The alternative which anarchism presents is the process of all in society being responsible, accountable, and unrestricted to become participants in their own life, having a meaningful voice in what effects them. That is a key point: participation; the ability to become a participant rather than the spectators we are now.
