  Cradle of Filth
  Thornography
Cradle of Filth Thornography Review By DeathWish Since their creation in 1991 out of Suffolk, England Cradle of Filth has taken the world by force. All you have to do is step outside and you will be sure to see Cradle of Filth t-shirt adorned kids just about everywhere, which further goes to show why Metal Hammer Magazine labeled COF as the most popular English metal band to hit the market since Iron Maiden. Their visual macabre of gothic horror/vampirism/and just pure evil is rivaled by few as they sit perfectly upon that throne. Their musical progress from their debut Cacophonous '94 release Principle of Evil Made Flesh to albums such as Dusk and Her Embrace (Fierce Records, 1996) and Cruelty and the Beast(Mayhem Records, 1998) is unlike any other band in their genre. They were one of the few bands that offered a different approach to their concept albums and their sound with every release, and hey any band that can put out shirts of nuns masturbating and the slogan "Jesus is a Cunt" is one band to take notice of. If not for anything more then to watch them give people like Jerry Farwell a complete stroke/heart attack. In 2004 Dani Filth and company found a new home on Roadrunner Records with their release Nymphetamine, and was even nominated for a Grammy. Now they have come back with their sounds of insanity with 2006's Thornography. So all of you fellow Cradle of Filth fans will be happy to know this album is wrapped in concept art that follows COF's traditional dark and depraved imagery. The intro to the album Under Pregnant Skies She Comes is classic COF dark and gothic styled keyboards. However that is where similarities end, the album's guitar work has to be at it's best production for the band since it's inception. Songs such as Dirge Inferno, Tonight in Flames, and The Foetus of a New Day Kicking have an almost thrash metal taste to it, and in a much clearer layout then previous releases. My own favorite track on the album Lovesick for Mina combines raw adrenaline rushing speed metal with different landscapes of melodic metal, done in such haunting fashion it could only be Cradle of Filth. Thornography does not simply stop it's evolution with the guitar work, Dani Filth's vocals are constantly taken in different directions. Dani has without a doubt uses a great deal lower end vocals on this album, but also incorporates different operatic vocals in his own style, best shown through the track The Byronic Man. Overall this album was in many ways a evolution of COF's sound that we have all come to love, and in whole most of these experiments do actually payoff very well. I will warn you some of Dani's new approaches might have to grow on you, I know I had to listen to it several times before fully appreciating. I would have to in the end recommend this album, as there is nothing more inspiring then seeing an old favorite experiment with different sounds and make it work, as well as remain true. Something traumatic must have happened to Dani.
The albums seem to be getting worse as the band grows older.
Thornograhpy is milder than their later works. And Thornography doesn't show me anything that I love about Cradle of Filth.
It sounds so different. And his voice is getting...more normal I guess as the albums go along too.

This album certainly different from the last ones. I don't really mind actually since it's a little more guitar driven, and that's just what I personally prefer.

Dani Filth is actually a very nice and chipper lad, in person...but he's incredibly talented, too.

I agree completely with 'Blaise' who said the albums are getting worse.. Where is all the darkness? all those lyrics of Midian Album.. Dani seems to have stopped yellin.... i don't know.. On the songs Byronic Man.. he shows no more of his Dark side.. only metal and more metal.. even though i still like Thornography.. because of the lyrics, and the sound.. .. I'd rather Midian than any other album.. but.. anyway.. I really think Dani does a great job!

Dani Filth is not the only member of the band. Come on people. He sure is the focus but without previous members like Gian, Stuart, Nick Barker, Adrian Erlandson, Martin Foul and Robin Graves, Cradle Of Filth would be nothing. I'm growing to dislike how much credit he gets for everything. It's not "Dani And The Filths" (though it may as well be called that). It's CRADLE OF FILTH.

And in my opinion his vocals are getting worse on every album. "Thornography" seems lack luster in comparison to "Midian" or "Cruelty And The Beast".

i totally agree , give me the albums before midian,
*cruelty double cd, Dusk, and Vempire*

this is almost as bad as the new *NIGHTWISH cd*
but they may come back . . .to the classic darkness .

BLACKHEART//

i agree , i have had the pleasure of seein them on multiple occaisions and NICK AND ROBIn always amazed the daylights out of me .
to me they are and always will be THE BEST PART OF the classic group .

FINAL NOTE //
i was honestly hoping to hear that april fools joke CD they spoke of a couple of years back.
but then MIDIAN came out and pissed me off.

Hey guys thanks for coming in and checking it out, and giving your thoughts as well. While I agree that the older material (Vempire, Dusk and her..., and Cruelty) were the better of albums, I still have to credit to them for trying something new. Perhaps they will get back to the original idea later down the line.

If you have any bands/albums you would like to see covered let me know, or if you want feel free to simply stop in and talk about the review.

Best wishes

I actually like this album, I thought it was good.

Dani's voice is changing and he is getting old. He can't always sound like he did when he first started. Bands always change and try to reinvent themselves.

The one thing you left out, is that in 'Byronic man'at is not Dani singing at the end, it is infact Ville Valo of HIM oing guest vocals for that track.

Cradle peaked on Midian in my opinion, but I have liked their work after, but it IS diffrent. Look at the line-up and record labels etc. Things have changed a lot since Midian...

I dont like them since they've signed with roadrunner they dont sound like they used to I still think there old stuff was amazing but seeing at them on Viva la Bam shocked the hell out of me and I didnt like that veryy muchh :// and as blackheartsreign said his vocals are getting worse I thought after Nymphetamine came out [b/c that was there worst so far]I thought it could only go up, I listened to Thornography it was a big disappointment. I still have hopes for them though.

There was a point when they were good? Cradle of Flith just like Manson are Shock rockers with very little real talent to name except shock their audiences. There is better out there in Black Metal alone. People should really get out more and listen to good music. Pick up the new ministry album over this junk.

The new Ministry is good, but calling COF "untalented" goes a little too far. I'd like to see you nail any of the keyboards, vocals, drums or guitar parts that COF have put out in their early years. COF isn't all about shock. They have written extremely intricate concept albums and if you still consider them to be a Black Metal band then you'd better go back to Black Metal 101 because you obviously don't know shit about Black Metal. They were Black Metal, back in the day, but they aren't anymore. They're more along the lines of a Gothic Metal band but more mainstream. And maybe you should stop being so pretentious and give bands more than just a quick listen to determine whether or not you enjoy them. Just because an artist has a large fan base doesn't mean that they suck (unless of course you put out a string of albums that fail to hit home every time so your fans are forced to listen to your back catalog exclusively).

I refuse to believe that there's even such thing as a CoF fan base, let alone a band this horrid.

I enjoy most of there albums, though in Thornography his voice has been compared to a girl at times. But none the less, Thornography is still sitting in my list of "songs" to listen to. It's not about how much of a fan base they have, if I was a listener of a certain type of band, is the type of lyrics, vocals, and style they bring is what draws me in.

I totaly agree with Moekatoek..

Cradle have been around for a long time, 14 years infact! It's pretty much impossible for their sound to remain entirely the same for that amount of time.
In life you move on to different things and the way you feel about things changes too, so when you are writing music its going to change with you. Its called 'progress'.

Personally I love Cradle.
I don't really care about those of you that don't, the world would be a fairly boring place if everyone liked the same thing, but I do feel some people are unnecessarily harsh about them.
To say they have no talent is a joke!
They are talented whether you care to admit that or not..
Thats why they have had 12 albums and you are sitting at home alone slating them over the internet. ;]

lol sorry, rant over. x

honestly i liked this album for the fact that it was a concept album. but danis vocals didnt do anything for me. i do enjoy everything from principal to damnation. but this album isnt as bad as some ppl make it sound. i mean yea its different, bt all bands have to experiment sometime. and i agree with all who say that dani is not the entire band. without ppl like gian, stewart, rob, nick, and others there wouldnt be cradle as we know it. personally i give this album a 6/10. not the best but not terrible either. it was better than nymphetamine in my opinion. hopefully they come back stronger this year

Cradle of Shit is what they are now. Ask any serious metalhead. After Midian, Whatever redeeming qualities there were about the band went downhill. Frankly, This new crock of horse manure doesn't deserve to be called "metal"...It's noise. Anyone who covers "Temptation" by Heaven 17 has balls for brains...The song was bad enough to begin with!

but her ghost in the fog is my favorite song, for the soul purpose of it was the first COF song i heard and its the song that got me into cradle! luckily my step dad had all there albums so i just listened to them for like 3 days!

okay, does anyone here know who doug Bradley is? if so then do you know he often does vocal pieces(speaking of course) on multiple COF tracks, which includ Satyrasis and Rise Of The Pentagram, i dont have an exact list at the moment, but if you listen to the songs you just be able to pick him out.
Hint*Doug Bradley played a man with a head full of nails for 8 consecutive films all based on the world and stories of Clive Barker*
