KMFDM returns with a new album. Yes, their last album, entitles 'Adios', was
supposed to be their last album, but that's ok. Apparently the breakup was
due to conflicts between En Esch and Sascha, and En Esch and Guenter started a
'Slick Idiot', while Sascha and Skold got together with Lucia Cifarelli and
worked on 'MDFMK'.
Well, this album has the same creative talent behind 'MDFMK', along with some
old KMFDM guests, such as Raymond Watts and Bill Riefling. Overall, this is a
pretty good KMFDM album. Definitely an improvement over their previous effort.
While it's a shame that En Esch is out of the picture, Tim Skold's a great
musician, and contributes well to KMFDM. Sascha keeps bringing us his KMFDM style,
and I enjoy Lucia Cifarelli's female vocals. "Attak/Reload" - this track is industrial rock, classic KMFDM style. With Skold doing killer guitar riffs, and Lucia Cifarelli doing vocals, and Sascha doing distorted backing vocals. A great energetic track. "Skurk" - Written by Sascha and Skold, this is a rebellious industrial track, done by these two masterminds of industrial/ebm. A pretty good track. "Dirty" - Bill Riefling, Raymond Watts, Joolz Hodgeson and Sascha joined forces to produce this track. True to classic KMFDM ritual, they actually say "KMFDM" in this track. "Urban Monkey Warfare"- with Lucia Cifarelli and Sascha doing contrasting male/female vocals. This song is decent. "Save Me" - a slower temp song, vocals are a bit mellow, yet still has strong electric guitar sounds. Tim Skold does most of the vocals. He's got a very smooth voice that goes well with this song. This song is really good and reminds me of Skold's solo material. "Yohoho" - an ethereal sounding track, with raymond watts doing vocals with his deep voice, and Lucia doing soothing, female backing vocals. A relaxing song, makes me feel like smoking a spliff. "Superhero" - an electro/ebm track, with Lucia doing some kick ass vocals. The chorus in this song just permanently gets stuck in my head. One of the better tracks on the album. "Sturm & Drang" - An industrial-rock song, militaristic sounding, aggressive, angry, with a special treat of Sascha singing some lyrics in german. I just love angry german industrial music. Overall, this song is not spectacular, but its pretty decent. "Preach/Pervert" - Sung by Raymond Watts, he seems to be mocking religion with lyrics such as "you will preach, i will pervert". An ok track. "Risen" - A track by Sascha and Skold, featuring heavy guitar riffs and shouting vocals. Pretty good track, with an aggro feel to it. "Sleep"- a track featuring Dorona Alberti and Lucia doing female vocals. This song sounds a bit chaotic and i couldnt really get into the melody of it. Overall, this is a good KMFDM album. KMFDM fans will be pleased and will be getting what they expect. rating: 7 out of 10 -reviewed by jet March, 2002 |

For those of you who are new to KMFDM (very few, if any) you should know
that this German group has been around for a while, being one of the
pioneers
of the industrial genre along with Skinny Puppy et al. You've
probably
heard their song "Juke Joint Jezebel" if you've ever seen Mortal
Kombat,
Bad Boys, etc. Really cool song. Unfortunately, you won't find
that track
on "Angst". "Angst" is a classic KMFDM album with the typical
all-synth
sounds and intimidating distorted vocals. Packed full of
rush-filled rage
and anger at society, "Angst" is a good CD to listen to if
you are in the
"Fuck it all!!" stage of your day. "Light" is my favorite
track on this
CD as it has a good up-beat rhythm, screaming chorus with nice
female vocals
as back up. There are other songs that are similar in taste
but more sinister.
"Lust" is one such songs, sung mostly in German with a
deep, death distortion
of tone. Sort of a "Ramstein meets Velvet Acid
Christ" regime. Too bad
though, not all the songs on the CD are as good.
"Angst" has a curse of
some songs lacking in originality and that special
spice that makes it
intense like the rest of the CD projects. "Sucks" for
example, lives up
to its name. The entire song is comprised of KMFDM
trashing itself by
yelling out of tune ontop of a monotonous, shallow drop
beat that takes
the song in no direction whatsoever. Now, maybe this is the
goal of KMFDM
in this song, I don't know. However, when listening to most
of the other
tracks, one tends to get in the mood of wanting more anger
ass-kicking
synth, and if you are wanting this, then you may not have the
patience
nor the humor to endure the entire song. It gets old quickly,
namely in
the first minute.
Despite all this, KMFDM fans should not be discouraged from buying this
CD
as many of the songs show promise of filling your industrial appetite.
The
album isn't a flop at all, but don't expect it to win a Grammy. Four
gold
stars by KMFDM on this album.
