The pain isn’t so bad once things start to become hazy, but the pain you feel once you are brought back from the hazy dream right before eternal rest is the worst.
My life was simple and average, well not so simple I guess. My job as an intern was hell on earth with horrible pay and un bearable long hours.
I was now living in the big city and pursuing a career in medicine like my family wanted for me, since my older sister and brother were drop outs. My sister got pregnant at 16 and then married at 18, thankfully to the same guy. My brother dropped out of college his freshman year after he was kicked out of his sorority only after being there a week
So I was suppose to be the golden child that made my parents happy. I was the top student in my graduating class and the youngest. My friends were book worms, and I had no social life, not even now.
Sitting at a corner table near the window I watched the sun come up over the horizon. Looking down at my bowl of fruit I poked my fork at the blueberries that were mixed in with strawberries, grapes, and other various fruits.
“So what plans do you have for you first weekend off in two months?” Lilly asked before yawning and sitting down across from me at the table. No matter how exhausted she was, she was always peppy and cheerful.
“I don’t… I was thinking about relaxing a bit.” I responded before yawning myself.
“Oh come on someone your age should be out partying on her nights off.” Lilly laughed biting into her bagel.
Lilly was an intern like me but she was 11 years older then me. I was merely 20 and already an intern. I graduated high school at the tender age of fifteen in a half and started college courses right at sixteen years old. My tuition was paid for by my parents as a birthday gift instead of a new car. I got the car when I turned eighteen.
“Yea I know, but I was in at least three surgeries each day for the past fourteen days. Plus having to do my rounds.” I sighed leaning back in my chair and shoving the last remains of my fruit bowl away.
“You know Sonja you need to get out and do some partying before its to late!” She looked at me with the Look. The look that she put with the one topic I hated…. MOTHERHOOD!!! Looking away from her I thought briefly about my sister and her five Crum snatchers and my brother with his three demon spawn. I couldn’t stand my nieces and nephews.
“Jeepers you know how to ruin my mood Lilly.” I slightly shuttered at the thought. Lilly continued to gabbed away for the remainder of our break.
We walked together as we made our way back to work and made a last stitch effort to get me to live a little; she blocked the door way with her body and looked at me.
“Lilly come on what are you doing? We are going to be late!” I pleaded with her, I had never been late to anything, even in school, I make my parents leave early most of the time.
“Not until you agree and promise me that you will come out with and some friends.” I knew she was serious by the look she had on her face.
“Ok fine, but we can’t go clubbing or to any bars cause I am not 21 yet.” I told her while looking at the clock behind her.
“Yes awesome and of course nothing like that cause I can’t drink anymore remember.” Lilly winked as she started to walk through the doors. Making my way to my shared office I smacked my forehead.
“Of course I forgot OK well I will meet you at the cars then.” I told her as I entered my office I shared with two other interns and the lead doctor we were under.
No one was in there so I got to work on my paper work I had to finish from the rounds I made before my ‘lunch’ break. I only had one hour left of work. I don’t know why they put some of the interns with a weird lunch break, but they did. I actually hated taking my last break an hour before I had to leave for the day. But at least my shift always ended in the light of day. I hated the night even when I was a kid. I hated leaving work at night, and getting home to a dark house.
When I first started as an intern I asked my parents to get me a switch for in my car that would turn on lights in the house. Which they did because they knew how much I hated walking into a dark house and wasting energy by leaving lights on.
My office mates didn’t return for the rest of my last hour. Putting my paper work away I made my way to the locker rooms and changed into my street clothes.
Finally making my way to my car I leaned against it as I waited for Lilly to get to hers. For some reason we always parked next to each other since we started our internship. Finally Lilly came jogging up to her car.
“If I didn’t put so much time, effort, and money into becoming a doctor I would quit right now.” She slammed her bag on the hood of her car and leaned on it.
“Lilly what happened?” Lully was never in any type of bad mood, even when she found out she got knocked up by a one night stand.
“I got written up today cause of Bonnie. That black haired bitch from hell! She took all my paper work I did yesterday and claimed it as hers and make it look like I never even bothered coming back from break yesterday and because of that I don’t get to work on the next organ transplant surgery.” Lilly roughly dug into her bag for her keys.
I knew lilly wanted to work on the next transplant and was enemies with Bonnie. But Bonnie was never able to get under her skin before like this. Maybe it was her hormones, wait no, that would effect anything for at least another couple of months.
“Lil what else happened, it takes a lot to get you this upset.” I took the couple of steps to close the gap between us and placed my hand on her shoulder. Lilly looked at me and looked like she wanted to start crying.
“Lil? Lil what else happened?” I was growing more concerned the longer she took to answer. After a few minutes lilly composed herself enough to answer me.
“I am getting transferred to a another wing of the hospital because Bonnie started rumors about me and Evan hall having a relationship and him being the father of my baby.” My jaw dropped when she told me. I hugged her and wanted to hurt bonnie so bad. This was dirty and low. Bonnie was not even that good and barely scraped by. The only reason she made it this far was because of her father being a governor and all the money he donated to the hospital.
Finally we got into our cars and decided to go to lunch afterwards. During lunch Lilly bitched and complained. This was the first time ever, that I have heard Lilly rant and rave specially this long.
Pulling into my drive way I cut the engine. Sitting in my car I rested my head against the head rest and sighed. Getting out of my car I looked around the garage. It was a neat and clean garage. There was only a stack of boxes in the corner and a push lawn mower off to the side. Grabbing my bag I went and unlocked my connecting door as I pressed the button to close the garage door. Kicking off my shoes in the entry way I dropped my bag on the counter once I entered the kitchen.
“Mr. D! My pretty boy!” I greeted as my small cat jumped on the counter closest to me and meowed frantically for my attention. I dropped my keys in the key bowl before picking him up. Scratching his chin as he purred and started to kneed my arm. This was the one thing I enjoyed about coming and being home, my loving cat; who was always wanting my attention. Putting some kitty show in his dish I made my way to my shower. After taking a nice long shower I pulled on some jammies and plopped into bed at the same time as Mr. d laid down on the pillow next to my head.
“Your so damn cute Mr. d.” I told him as I laced his tail through my fingers. Even though I was exhausted I knew that Mr. d would fall asleep long before I would. And of course he did and I laid there wide awake now.
“Damn it why does this always happen when I finally have time off?” I asked no one in particular, since there was no one else there to ask.
Rolling out of bed, I went down stairs into my kitchen to make myself a cup of tea.
Strumming my fingers on the counter I noticed I had some messages on the answering machine. There was only one new one, which was my main boss doctor Robert chambers.
“Hello miss Thompson, this is dr. chambers. I hope you are relaxing well, I have went over the records and have found you have only had two days off in the past three months. Plus you are doing extremely well. So I am calling to let you know that you are getting a total of two weeks off cause of the lack of time off prior. Enjoy.” then the answer machine clicked off.
I pressed the save button so that way I could confirm this tomorrow morning when I knew he was in. My tea kettle started to whistle. Pouring myself some hot tea I grabbed my cup and book that I was now planning to finish and went back up stairs to bed for some relaxation.
