TL-DR

It takes quite a bit of courage to admit publicly that you haven't finished reading a book you started, or admitting you bought it five years ago and have yet to have browsed through it. A valiant research had been released in Britain recently, which contains a list of the top ten books British people have difficulties in finishing. The interrogatees claim that they are having trouble focusing on long books and it's hard for them to find the spare time to read. All over the world there's been a rapid decrease of book reading, and there is no doubt that activities in front of the screen is the main reason for the cut down of time dedicated to reading books; This phenomenon has several explanations: Today, thanks to the computer and the internet, people have access to material which was a lot less accessible in the past, and even then only via books. Online, there is an endless number of articles, books, dictionaries and encyclopedias, and anyone can find what they're looking for without having to leave the computer stand. However, it appears that the change in our behavior pattern does not sum up with moving from paper books to computer screens. Slowly but steadily, we are starting to lose the ability to read long texts and the ability to manage with them properly. Technology, in this case, won't help. A couple of months ago, the internet's largest retail, Amazon, launched the Kindel - an electronic book which can contain hundreds of books, as well as allowing access to news sites and blogs. The Kindel received very positive reviews, and, according to Amazon, it's being sold frequently. A short while after its release, a New York Times journalist asked Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, what does he think are the chances of the product's success. He probably expected an answer like "It's badly designed" or "It's not comfortable to use", but Jobs surprised the reporter with a completely different reply: "It doesn't matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don't read anymore... 40% of the American population have read a single book or less this entire year." The phenomenon is very noticeable on children. The estimates rounding the success of the famous wizard, Harry Potter, vanished when the polls and research arrived. It turned out that only the Harry Potter books have managed to win the children's interest, and only few continued on reading other books, while most went back to the internet and the television. An extensive research done in the USA discovered that the reading comprehensive skills of those under the age of 24 in the contemporary generation have been steadily going downhill over the last decade. The directors of the research pointed out the connection between reading comprehension skills and jobs with a bigger income, and that employers mentioned that comprehension and self-expression are areas which a lot of job applicants have difficulties in. Also, it turns out that those who have read more, are more inclined to integrate in social activities, volunteer for work, and generally being better citizens. Professor David Nicolas of the UCL (the University College in London) have been watching the way students use electronic books. "The students constantly hop between books when they're reading, reading a bit from here and a bit from here, since this is, in fact, the Google generation." The influence of this attitude towards information can harm the students' research abilities nowadays and in the future. Prof. Nicolas recognizes the problem in his own home: "When I looked at how my daughter watches television and changes channels nonstop, I asked her why she won't decide what to watch. Her answer was that she was watching all of the channels. This is how students behave. They become 'shoppers' who come in, buy something, and go somewhere else, instead of researching properly, and it's happening all over the world." One of the solutions Nicolas brings up, is enhancing the librarians' capabilities and turning them into reading guides. With their aid, students can learn how to read and research in an organized manner. In his opinion, the guidance can also be done by school teachers and parents. Nevertheless, not all is dark in the digital world. In the beginning of the year 2008, there's been a 24% increase in income brought by electronic books (compared to 2007). Researchers are still deliberating the meaning of this change. It is possible that the Google generation will just have to learn the skills the older generations did in the past. Other researchers believe that it is possible that this is just a phase, and when the searching and reading technologies are more advanced, data will be more accessible and it will allow young readers to once again relate to long texts. In any case, countries all over the world consider handling this new challenge as a national destination. In the US, for example, a plan was initiated to encourage residents to start a reading group, in which they meet up and discuss books they've read. It is important that one remembers that the "screen culture" is growing due to the major developments which took place in the last few decades, and are always considered to be progress. There is no point, of course, in fighting these developments, which are already an inseparable part of our lives, and it even reforms us in some matter. However, the habit of opening a book and starting to read it in one's spare time allows people to absorb values, be expoded to various opinions, and even experience inciteful emotions. There is no doubt that the "screen children" are missing out on a lot of it, as their affinity to books lessens. -Discovered on the world of warcraft forums. TL-DR version: people dont read books anymore cause of computers. Good/bad? so what do you guys think? how many books have YOU read this year?
