WHY I AM GOTH an Essay by Sir William Welles Just the other day, someone mistook my style of dress as being an elaborate costume, worn outside of the Halloween season, required for the purpose of employment in a theme restaurant, or some other fantasy based establishment. I replied that I did indeed work at a restaurant from time to time, to help out my mother's business, but no...this is how I choose to dress...everyday. Naturally, the next inquiry that oozed out of this curious Day-Crawler's maw was why I would choose to look like Captain Morgan's (TM) evil twin brother everyday of my life, and especially in the sweltering summer heat nonetheless! My simple, yet proud answer was this: "Because I am Goth." You would think that would have sufficed, right? The curious Day-Crawler would just give me a weird look, I would stare back, they would get spooked out and leave, right? Nope! Wrong! The next thing I hear is this: "Oh! You are a Goth! But why are you a Goth?" My reply: "Because I like to look like Captain Morgan's (TM) evil twin brother...especially in the sweltering summer heat!" And with that my patience had expired and I left, leaving this rather mundane individual to ponder my enigma...Which came first? The Raven or the Egg? But as I walked away, and especially for the next following two days, I mulled over that very particular question of why I consider myself a Goth...what's the sole reason I live my life as such? It's certainly not for the "fitting in" perks!!! I tried to come up with one solid, if maybe witty, answer...and guess what? There isn't any one answer!!! But I did do a lot of inner searching and reflection, and I came up with a bunch of various reasons that when summed up to make a whole would result in my specific Gothy raison d'etre! Here goes... (in no particular order) I am Goth because I find a certain comfort in darkness...both as in the absence of ambient light, and as in the state of mind. I am also Goth because I enjoy living at night while avoiding direct sunlight as much as possible...it burns my eyes! I am Goth because I can physically feel jealousy. I am truly Goth because I wholeheartedly believe in Elegance and Romance in a world that severely lacks it. I am partially Goth because my favorite color has been black since pre-school...my crayon box was small. I am Goth because I am very alone. I am Goth because I prefer the Alternate-brook rather than the Main-stream. I am confidently Goth because I do not like to socialize with random people, but I do like to socialize with other Goths. I am Goth because lightning excites me. I am Goth because the world in which we live in has become too complex for the average human mind. I am Goth because I was hurt by others. I am also goth because the music we listen to is amazing and so diverse. I am Goth because I find the women within the scene to be not only beautiful, but mysterious, smart, stylish, and above all independent and resilient...and they actually enjoy wearing lingerie *wink*wink*!!! LOL! I am Goth because I don't subscribe to any religion, which, in my eyes, have all become an undetected form of organized crime. I am also Goth because I actually have a reason (if not several) to be depressed. I am Goth because I have no interest in professional sports...of which the term is, in itself, an oxymoron. I am equally Goth because I like Winter, but I like the Fall best of all. And speaking of which...I am Goth because my favorite holiday is Halloween (what a shocker!). I am Goth because I revel in all things Spooky...even though I mostly live in a Creepy world. I am Goth to escape, but also to be very grounded to the reality that surrounds me. I am also Goth because I find cemeteries to be a place filled with beautiful works of sculpted art, history, love and loss. I am Goth because I have come to realize the certainty of my inevitable death...when so many others choose to deny their own. I am Goth because I believe 95% of the world's population suffers from a form of mental retardation. And lastly, I am Goth because it is who I am... Pretty boring stuff, huh? Yeah...Imagine me listing all of this to anyone asking me that mundane question of: Why are you a Goth? And after thinking of all of those reasons why I feel I am Goth...and it's not just a passing phase (Sheesh! Not at my age anyways)...I did manage to come up with one solid, and witty, answer that would have left me satisfied at the end of that ridiculous conversation a few days ago: "I am Goth because...you are not!" The End.

ANNOUNCEMENT: New Goth City’s plan to take over new Dark Bars!!!

Now, as most of you know, there is a serious lack of bars in the New York City area that caters to our scene on a nightly basis. Hang out spots like the Raven and Rare are long gone, and there have been no other bars that have taken the plunge to be considered a 7-nights-a-week Dark Bar. Sure, Jeckyl & Hyde's and The Slaughtered Lamb might try to fit the bill; however, they cater mostly to tourists or to college kids that like to be "weekend Goths!" But, I have a plan!!! It's kind of a wicked plan...but if we stick together on this, we just might prevail. Listed on NewGothCity.com's "Dark Bar" Section are a few bars that I've scouted out in the Manhattan area. Each of these places seem to have been decorated in a lush Goth style. Red and Blacks...Victorian furniture...you get the idea. The only problem here is the (unusual) clientele, and the (even more unusual) music they play is not goth, and really doesn't compliment the surroundings. But these places are Dark Bars!!! They just don't know it...yet! Here's the plan: If you can, or feel so inclined to, on a night when there isn't a club event...a slow Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, sort of night...go with a small group of friends to one of these bars. Order a drink (or several), and enjoy the scenery. I know for a fact that two out of these bars sometimes has a DJ. Make a request for something "Goth-Light" (ease into it with The Cure, or something like that). The more of us that do this, the more the DJs, the Bartenders, and the Bar owners will realize that they will want to cater to our crowd, and VOILA! A Dark Bar is Born!!! Now, I know some of you jaded types out there (you wouldn't be goth if you weren't) might think that this is a shot in the Dark (get it?), but it is worth a shot!!! Maybe...just maybe...we might have a haunt to call our own on any given night of the week. And if you know of a cool bar that you want to recommend for this, email me the address at: contact@newgothcity.com, and I'll check it out! See You in the Dark! Sir William Welles
