Chapter 3 January 23, 2008, 11:26:pm
“Here’s your Grande Caramel Macchiato. Have a good day.” Danni sat down at the table in the corner away from the windows and the people. She didn’t know exactly what time to meet this mysterious person at, so she went to Starbucks right after school, and wasn’t planning on leaving until 7 that night, which meant she had a lot of free time to do nothing. She watched as people waited impatiently for their coffee. One girl caught her eye. It was one of those girls from school who acted like stupid blond bimbos. She was wearing incredibly short red and white boodie shorts and a red halter-top with white pumps. Danni disliked this girl greatly. Her name was Erika and Danni knew her from the fifth grade and beyond. They both transferred to their current school and the rest didn’t matter. She would always fight with her and this time, she decided to avoid her. She pulled out the yellow packet contain all the essays, along with a red correcting pencil. She started reading one from Connor, a boy she was really good friends with in the seventh grade. He was writing an essay about the Catcher in the Rye. ‘Such a classic’ thought Danni. She made few corrections here and there, and commented on the closing paragraph of the essay. Danni took her drink and sipped at it. As she set it down on the napkin she glanced up and saw Max through the window, and sighed. She really didn’t feel like dealing with any drama so she went back to the essays. Then a high-pitched voice started complaining.
“Um, excuse me? This is not my drink.” The boy behind the counter looked scared, a new recruit most likely. He just stood there with a jug of milk in his hand.
“Well? Are you going to fix it or what? Where is your manager?” The boy pointed to the wall, and went to get the manager. A lady came back in the boys place aware of the commotion.
“Is there something I can help you with ma'am?”
“Ya, this guy got my drink wrong. I specifically said a low fat soy chai latte. And he gave me whole milk with foam.”
“Well there’s your specific order right here on the counter. Did it ever occur to you that you might have the wrong drink?”
Erika glared at the manager aware that she had just been ‘dissed’. She sighed and looked at the lady.
“Yeah whatever, can you heat it up some then, I am in a hurry.” The manager smiled in a fake way and said of course. Erika rolled her eyes and turned her head, and then she caught Danni’s gaze. Aware that Erika was staring at her, she laughed silently to herself.
“And what’s so funny freak?” At this point, everyone inside was aware of the spoiled wanna-be hotel heiress.
“Nothing, just a funny essay.” Danni smirked and continued editing the essays.
“Here you go ma’am,” said the manager, “Have a great day.”
As Erika was walking out she said “Yeah, whatever. Oh hi Max.” She walked out to her car with a conceited strut.
God she is so annoying! Thought Danni. She finished correcting Connors paper, and came to Brian’s. Wow this is really good! All he has to fix is his concluding paragraph, but then again, that’s what most people need to work on. The essay Brian’s theory on how most languages branched off of a dominant language, which would explain the reason why a number of languages were similar and recognizable compared to English.
Wow this guy is really smart! Danni chuckled out loud at the thought. The out of the corner of her right ear she heard someone.
“What’s so funny?” Danni jumped in her chair, and swung around to hit the person in the face. The person caught her wrist in a grip.
“You have to be careful, miss. You could hit someone in the face.” It was Max. Danni wrenched her hand free, disgusted that he touched her. She turned back around and continued on the essays. Max walked around the table to the chair opposite Danni, where her backpack was placed. He picked it up and tossed it on the floor, then took the seat. Danni opened her mouth in protest, but just as quickly closed it.
“So, what are you doing here?” He said this with a devilish grin.
“What does it look like I’m doing?” Danni shot back, not even glancing up from her paper. Max leaned forward and scanned the papers. Then he got out of the chair, and scooted it next to Danni’s chair.
“Well, it looks like you’re correcting papers.” He waited for a response from Danni.
“Nice job Einstein, you’re a genius.” Danni tried to push his face away from hers with her free hand. Max frowned, then propped his head on his right hand.
“But I think you’re waiting for someone…” Danni stopped what she was doing, and held her breath. ‘God, please don’t let him have my phone!’ She thought. Max leaned forward again, but close enough that their noses touched this time.
“Are you on a date? Oh, how nice, the author’s finally found a soul mate!” She leaned away and drank some more of her coffee.
“Why are you so immature? You’ve got to be the most childish guy on this entire planet!”
“Well, that’s not for you to decide. Have you met everyone on this planet?”
“Why can’t you just leave me alone?” Danni was now passed the point of being nice. Every minute she spent with Max, she risked not getting her phone back. Max thought about this.
“Because you’re cute when you’re mad.” Danni stared at him intensively. “And it’s fun to annoy you. So who’s paper you correcting?”
“God, just leave me alone.” By now, Danni had reached the shouting point and the manager came over.
“Danni, is something wrong, can I help you?” The manager sized up Max, giving him the evil eye. Danni sighed, the least thing she wanted to do was start any chaos. Rubbing her temples she said, “No, everything’s fine January.” The manager walked away unconvinced.
“So who are you waiting for?” asked Max, breaking the silence. Danni threw her hands in the air and said, “I give up.” She started gathering her papers and put them away. Max looked startled and stood up. As Danni walked away towards the door she said, “Away from you!” As she headed off towards her house, Max reached into his pocket and pulled out a black razor with a skull sticker on it. “I guess she really didn’t want it that badly.”

As Danni stomped off towards her house she took out her phone and dialed Jessi. Waiting for her to pick up, she kicked leaves resting on the sidewalk.
“Hey you’ve reached Jessi, I’m not here right now, but leave me a message and I call you back soon, depending on who you are-“
“Jessi you can’t say that!” It was the recording her and Jessi did together.
“I can say whatever I want, it’s my phone.”
“No, you can’t! What if you come off as rude?”
“Then it’ll teach people to not judge people by impressions.”
“But if you come off as rude, they might not leave a message.”
“Fine, whatever, just kidding.”
They both laughed on the recording, and then it cut them off, which was followed by a loud beep. They made the voicemail almost over two years ago, and Jessi still hadn’t changed it.
“Hey Jessi, it’s me Danni. I am gonna stop by my house, to pick up some clothes and stuff for tonight, be there soon, bye.”
Danni shut off the phone, and continued walking to her house. About a block away from her house, her stomach grumbled loudly. Ah, I am so hungry! She had finished her Macchiato almost half an hour ago, but it wasn’t quite filling. She stopped by ‘The Coffee Shack’, a coffee hut by her house. She ordered a Grande Iced Caramel Macchiato and a cinnamon scone, using up the last of her cash she had on hand. As she walked up to her house, she noticed a police car in her driveway with a crazed man sitting in the back. He looked like he had dark stains all down the front of his shirt.
Oh my god, what happened? She ran up to her house, and pushed her way through the back door. As she trampled through the kitchen, the worst possible scenario played in her mind. Even though they weren’t her biological parents, they took her in when no other foster parents would.
“Susan! Nick! Where are you guys? Hello?” She barged through the swinging door to the living room.
“Hello? You guys, he-?” She stopped mid-sentence to find Susan and Nick sitting on the couch with a police officer in the armchair with a notepad. Danni stopped, straightened up, and suddenly felt really stupid. Her foster parents and the officers looked started.
“I’m sorry, I thought something had happened. Well I’ll just go up…” Danni trailed off, feeling like an idiot.
“No it’s alright, Danni, this is Officer Camille.” Susan explained that she had come home and found a burglar in the entertainment room trying to steal the LCD Vizio plasma TV. When Susan found him, he tried to attack her. In order to protect herself, she threw her favorite vase at him. He knocked him out, covering the front of him with dirt.
“Oh, that’s what the dark stuff was.” Again, Danni felt stupid, and starting scratching the back of her head.
“Well of course it was dirt, what did you think it was.” Nick asked her with a troubled expression. They all looked anticipate her answer. Looking around the room, trying to avoid everyone’s gaze she stuttered.
“Well, I uh, I, well it looked like it was blood. So I thought one of you got hurt.” Susan’s expression softened.
“Oh hunny, you don’t have to worry.”
“Okay, well I don’t want to hinder you anymore, but I am going back over to Jessi’s house.” As soon as the words left her mouth, she regretted them. She had never told either of them she had left. Nick controlled the conversation.
“What do you mean back? Did you leave last night?” Nick’s tone turned serious. Danni hated getting in trouble, especially because she hardly ever did, so she would get scolded harsher than most. Susan was more understandable than Nick, so she jumped in.
“Honey, she called me when she got to school, and told me.” Nick questioned no further, but still suspicious. “So hurry, or your friend will worry. And be careful walking over. The new neighbors have a pit bull, and we don’t know if he bites or not.” Danni nodded, and started walking to the stairs.
“Um, excuse me can you come back for a sec?” It was the officer. Oh god what did I do? “I was just wondering if you could sign this, for my daughter. She just turned 13, and she loved your book.” Danni relaxed a bit more. “Oh, sure.” Danni signed it and went to pack her things. I was so worried; I thought I was in trouble…

Danni showed up at Jessi’s front door, and knocked. Jessi’s younger sister answered it. She peeked out from behind the door, and then grinned widely.
“Danni! Are you spending the night?” Before she could answer, Jessi’s father came out.
“Young lady, what have I told you about answering the door by yourself?”
“Not to” the little girl lowered her head in guilt. But Jessi’s father was never mad at his kids. He scooped up the girl in his arms and greeted Danni. “She’s up in her room, talking on the phone. Sometimes I wonder why I even bought that thing.” Danni chuckled, and headed to the room she left that morning. As she neared the door, she knocked and asked to come in. There was no answer, so se let herself come in anyway. When she walked in Jessi was sitting on her bed, talking away. Danni dropped her stuff on the floor, and starting loading her clothes into the spare drawer at the bottom of the dresser. When Jessi got off the phone, she came over and hugged Danni from behind. Danni turned her neck so she could see Jessica’s face.
“Who were you talking to?” she asked. Jessica took her fingers and drew them across her lips, in a zipping motion.
“Oh come on, was it a guy.” Jessi started giggling, and threw a pillow at her face. She cried out, laughing.
“Whatever, fine, don’t tell me now. But you will eventually.” They both went to the bed and started pulling out papers.
“Hey Danni, was my paper in that packet? Because I can’t find it in my back pack.”
“Yeah, I took it from your binder, I knew you were busy, so I corrected it. I finished all the papers, so now I just have to five them back to everyone tomorrow.” Danni went through the papers making sure they were all there.
“Man, I can barely finish my essays on time, but you do yours, plus half the schools.” Danni smiled, continuing shifting through papers. Jessi picked up her phone, and put the ringer on silent. They planned to watch a movie right after they were done with homework.
“So did you get your phone back?”
Danni groaned, then threw a pillow on the floor.
“Well…Did you?”
“No! That stupid jerk Max showed up, and I got so mad that I left before the person even showed up. Oh god, Jessica what I am gonna do? That phone was the last thing my parents bought me before…” Danni never finished her sentence. She sat there motionless, as tears started filling her eyes. Jessica leaned forward and hugged her friend, trying to comfort her, then pulled away.
“Don’t worry, we’ll find it, together. I promise. Okay? So stop crying.” Danni dried her eyes, and pulled out a checklist of all the peoples essays. She started doing thins to make sure she never lost anyone’s paper. She went down the checklist. As she crossed off names, Jessica started doing her nails. Halfway through, Danni started groaning again.
“Oh no! Where is it? Please, please let it be here.”
“What’s wrong? What happened?”
“I think I lost Brian’s essay. I’m sure I had it at Starbucks!” Danni went frantic tearing through all the papers, almost knocking over the bottle of nail polish.
“Calm down. Are you sure you had it then?” Jessi had to stop Danni from practically ripping apart an essay. She took a deep breath and sighed.
“Yes, I was working on it when Max came up. Maybe it’s still there. I call Starbucks tomorrow.” Together they put all the papers away and started getting the movie ready.
“What happens if you don’t find it? What will you do?” Jessi asked with concern. Danni thought about it for a moment.
“Well, I’ll just have to tell Brian, and face the consequences.”

At about midnight that night, a boy walked through his front door, up to his room. He entered the door, and kicked off his shoes. As he bounced on his bed, he got comfortable, and started reading a paper with red marks on it. After about 5 minutes, the boy looked up. It was Max. He leaned over his bedside table and turned off the light. As he lay in darkness he said to no one “Well, Brian Saunders, looks like you’re one good writer.”

Ok, Everyone,

I just got my braces, which is why I won't be attending school today... So when you guys see me tommarow, please, please don't make fun of me. And it's only the top row, in a couple weeks, I'll go back and get the bottom row done. When they were sticking the little nubs on my teeth, I felt like an idiot because there was this large plastic thing shoved in my mouth, so I felt retarted...

And even though I've been finished with chapter three for quite some time, I'm having trouble posting it on my journal, so please, everyone bear with me.

P.S. I am now a Premium Member, so don't do anything you don't want me to see.

Love you guys, ~Breanna~
