So lost, tell me how can it be? Desperately trying, to understand why, I push you from me. He closed the door behind him with such force that the pane shattered. He had had it with this life, with the people surrounding him. People as a whole. He hated them all. Stepping the last step down his stairs, he took a deep sigh, feeling as though what he was about to do was the most right thing he had ever done. He was leaving for good. Spinning a line of magic in to circles, he began forming a portal. To where, he did not know. He did not care. The glowing lines spun around and around until they swirled together. He pushed forward into the center of it with his hand and it solidified in to a wall of blue, glowing energy. He stepped through. So close, but so far away. I cannot see, how this happened to me, I'm so sorry to say! Phelix grasped the ball of energy firmly in his hand. He knew it would come in handy, even for a small task. Stepping forward on to a mound of sand, he looked out into the vast desert and saw not but an empty canvas. Waving his hand about, creating lines of glowing magic in all colors and shapes, would look absolutely insane to any bystander. Luckily there were none of these around. He was pleased at this. First, he traced a large circle in the sand. It spun, dragging the sand with it, creating a vortex. It revolved a few times and the glowed a bright blue, turning to water. A beautiful spring had been created. He smiled in approval. Closing his eyes, thinking hard, and arching that ball of energy in to a bolt between his hands and the ground in front of him, he imagined a building. Not just any building, but a magnificent palace. One that stood above the sand around him, with stairs leading to the ground. No logic explained this building, though, when he opened his eyes, it was there. Again, he was pleased. "Now," he thought aloud, "What could I do for company?" An idea sparked in his head, and he set to work. Spinning circles and lines and waves of energy, he created a small creature before him. Such a simply being, with its small teeth, nubby head and limbs, was intended to be a peaceful thing. It thought otherwise. It jumped at him, opening its tiny jaw as wide as it would go, prepared to take a bite from his arm. It did just as it had intended, latching in deep and drawing blood. He jerked back and shot a bolt of energy at it, vaporizing it in to a fine dust. So lost , For so long I cannot tell... How in my mind, and what moment in time, I woke up in this cell. He was no healer. A creationist, a worldbender, but not a healer. He summoned up a roll of cloth with his good arm and used it to wrap his wounds. The bleeding had to be stopped, or he would surely die. Perhaps creatures were not his thing? Perhaps it was a fluke. With both of his arms functional again, he began swirling the magic around and around to create yet another creature. This persisted for weeks on end. Every conjured creature did the same thing: attack. It made no sense to him. Perhaps it was instinct of the creature? Perhaps it was a curse. Fate, even? One day, he stopped to think. He had lost track of time. Had it been a month? A year? Perhaps ten? With this thought, he had no idea where he was. He just knew that it was home. A cold, empty home, inhabited by only him. But that was just the thought he needed, he thought. Him? Why not another? Yes, a person. What genius he felt. He started weaving magic again. I want you to go away! I want you so much to stay! So sorry to say! The glow died away, and before him stood the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. He noticed his flaw immediately. The woman, looking forward at him with her hollow, eyeless gaze, clearly intended to speak with her non-existent mouth. That was the flaw. It was nothing more than a mannequin. Although he had discovered the flaw of this piece, he had also discovered the reason for his failure. He could create a building, a lake, a tree, a rock, an entire world, even a body and a life, but not a soul. It all lacked soul. The most basic of animal would run on instinct. The most complex was nothing more than a servant. Still, it was company. I want you to go away from, from me! (So close, but so far away!) I want you so much to stay with...ME! So sorry to say! There was not more than a light breeze in this place. Not enough to move the sand, sway the leaves, or make a single noise. Phelix was surrounded by perpetual silence, only to be broken by the sound of his own voice. A voice that drove him insane. When it spoke, it sent chills down his spine. His words lacked sense or meaning. They hardly reflected his thoughts, which were no better. A broken man, in shambles? No. Not from his eyes. His servants brought him food and drink, all of which he had spun from his own magic. He was living in his own paradise. His own hollow paradise. (I cannot see how, this happened to me.) He stood up. He knew an eternity had passed in this world of his. It finally clicked. He wasn't living in paradise. He was living in hell. He had given everything up, thrown it all away. He was alone. He had the world, but the world contained nothing. "So this is how it feels to suffer." he said, as if to no one. These were the first sensible words he had spoken in what seemed to be forever. I'm so sorry to say! He stepped down the stairs of his palace, closing the door softly behind him. Walking forward, he stopped at the small pond. Looking down at his first creation, he turned to see the wonder he had made. There were mountains in the distance, which shadowed the palace at dusk, creating a beautiful sunset. Trees and flowers grew around in the sand, perpetually sustained in a lifeless glow. Small pebbles surrounded a lake on the side of his palace, and a grove of fruit trees and berries grew on the other side. All of it was meaningless. He turned around, facing the pond again. Weaving a small line with his hand, he froze it. Then he began to swirl up another portal. It had been so long since he had created such a thing, he didn't remember how to give it an end. Then again, he didn't really care where it went. This time, he had a goal. He needed to find a soul. Edit: Holy shit, I just realized that this is the first story i've ever written in which the main character doesnt die. Edit 2: The lyrics in italics are from So Sorry To Say by Celldweller, and I make no claim to them. blah blah
