Body mods while immuno-deficient?
forum Fashion & Body Mods
Hello everyone!

I have an auto-immune disorder for which the treatment is to slightly suppress my immune system, which of course leaves me a little more vulnerable to infections - be they viral, bacterial, etc. Therefore my question is this: is it "ok" to get any more piercings or maybe a small tattoo while I'm on this treatment?

I'm almost 30, I've wanted more body mods for almost 9 years now but my treatment is continuing indefinitely. Obviously before I commit to anything I would consult with my dr and any piercer/tattoo artist I would choose, but I wondered if anyone here had similar experience.

Thanks in advance.

I hadn't a similar experience, but I think you need to check with your doctor and the artist/piercer and do it in a very clean studio... I know you wrote you'd check with those two, I mean: do it now. If the cure is for a undefined time, maybe today your body is stronger than tomorrow, so carpe diem and hurry up! Anyway, good luck for all!

I'm no doctor, but my gut reaction is that infection would be more likely while rejection would be less likely.

They would probably take longer to heal as they wouldn’t be your body’s main priority, and that could pose a problem for tattoos in particular. The quicker a tattoo can heal the better as there’s a smaller window for infection and less trauma on the skin - a tattoo is essentially an open wound for the first couple of days before the skin begins to knit back together afterall.

Whoever you check with first, relay what they tell you to the next person you speak to - personally I’d see your doctor then tattoo artist in that order. Doctors are very anti-tattoo at the best of times (one wrongly told me I’d be allergic after having a reaction to hairdye) so their advice could potentially be a little biased, and it’s not them who’ll be tattooing you.

I can’t forsee any major problems to be honest, just a little extra care and vigilance during the healing process :-)
