The Philosophical Viewpoints Of The "Gothic" Sub-Culture.

forum Intelligent Discussion
Hello All,

In a world of "Just be happy" are there certain viewpoints that many of you share? I think it's true that fashion and music play a large role overall in the scene; however it seems many of us share sharp differences intellectually with the rest of the overall population. Personally I have observed a very strong open-mindedness, a culture largely open to discussion on mental illness, a general distaste of unhealthy drug use, and dealing with societal problems internally rather then lashing out in anger. These are just my opinions. Any thoughts?

I feel like goth sticks to a darker beauty that utilizes history as a reference. You have Victorian, industrial, modern, midevil. We will take our taste from different eras and bring them back.

Wow. I really thought that was something about me in particular. I never bothered to see if I was the only one getting down rated. Now I feel self centered.

It's a patience thing. When he goes all Alex Jones on us and regresses back to those asinine conspiracy stories and posts them before he checks them, I can't help but poke my finger into his ribs to let him know I'm disappointed.

Yes. See, I am a father and it's my responsibility to get a child ready for the real world and adulthood, so, whenever I see other children acting dangerously or doing something that'll harm themselves or others, I feel compelled to intervene. It's parental instinct.

I am really patient with your climatology ideas, because there is some aspects of climate change that are still being debated, and I'll cut you some slack regarding it, because there is a bunch of misinformation out there, a lot based off of sound scientific study around natural cycles (that assume we don't have 200 years of human industrialisation) that seem to contradict the current consensus understanding. It can be confusing. I will gladly listen to your woes and fears about immigration, people with legitimate gripes have a right to a voice and the debate is a mixed bag, unfortunately based in emotions and unfounded fears. I accept your ideas of gun ownership and general conservative ideals, because I come from a conservative, gun owning family and I'd be lying if I said that experience doesn't influence me. But when you post the tinfoil hat shit, the Alex Jones roadkill quasi-journalistic, bottom feeding rubbish like that false flag, school shootings are hoaxes rubbish or the white nationalist, "our government brings in brown people to destroy the white majority" stupidness, I lose my patience.

You can call it attention getting, you can call it trolling or you can call eating magical rainbow farts, it don't matter, I'm going to make sure you know you didn't use that superior IQ of yours and you didn't check your facts or really any common sense that you claim you have.

You stop being dumb and ill leave you alone. If you don't like it, you know how to block people.

To me the key is existentialism. Goths having an appreciation of darkness then have an easier time with the existential dilemma facing all humans of the limited temporality and meaninglessness of our existence.

One thing to note is that rebellion and individualism is so strong in the Goth community that I find it to be a bit self-destructive and self-defeating so that it is much more difficult to organize a sustainable community, which would have tremendous benefits for all of us. Organizing Goths is much like herding cats !! Lol

But I find much more open-mindedness among Goths, but the thing to understand about clubs is that we’re trying to maintain a dark spooky Gothic atmosphere, and if you disrupt that with colorful and off-theme clothing then you will receive negative comments. That’s not about closed-mindedness, but about a certain ........ thing ........ people are working toward, which you have damaged.

"Fucker spent a long-ass while trynna track down every post I'd made in my entire history on this forum and systematically thumbs-down them all. I'm way too vain to be losing points over that gebroni. "

does it give you -3s on every post you make?.. same here, i wonder how many others he does it to? "

Ulf, I'm not interested enough in you to "track down every post you've made" and I don't see what the point of that would be.

Get over yourself.
You even making a whine post completely contradicts your claim not to be "vain".

If a thread looks interesting, I read it. If there's something that I very much agree with or that's particularly insightful, I upvote it.
On the contrary, if there's a comment that's particularly shortsighted, or even bigoted or foolish, I downvote it.

You just, unfortunately, have a high likelihood of saying stupid shit.
It's not personal.

I've downvoted Frank and Kumquat's statements on occasion, and I've also upvoted them too.
If you actually paid attention, you'll see I have actually upvoted things you've said on occasion.
Sadly, it doesn't happen often because your ideas are bad.

Could we start discussing the gothic subculture again? :/

As for me, I don't really know anything about it. I just listen to Sisters of Mercy and ignore the tendencies/expectations for the adherence of any subculture tbqh. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I wouldn't let it bog you down to much. You are going to have different people tell you different things. You will hear vampire kids arent goth, emo isnt goth. However I would make light of the label just except it as a form of expression towards a darker beauty of the arts. (Fashion, music, literature, history). Some Individuals proud of the label may start to interject what is allowed and that could be due to dislike towards a certain alternative fashion or lifestyle. For example when I was a kid I hated emo being joined in. I hated being called emo. I was going through a Lucifer obsession phase with the book "Paradise Lost" and I viewed the emo culture as sad cringy and weak and didn't want it to be with my culture. However growing out of arrogant mindsets I don't hold that hatred anymore and I really just don't care. I just let them live and don't impeach on others way of life and just accept it as an art. Its like metal there is so many sub genres.

The people I have chosen to surround myself with tend to be very open minded and kind, however some of the people I have come in contact with have been rather cruel. So many people have their own precise idea of what goth is and if someone doesn't hit each requirement then they aren't seen as part of the culture. I will note that most of the people I have come in contact with that were snippy, snyde, or downright hateful have generally been younger (15-23 or 24) and were probably still trying to figure out who they were and where they fit and lashed out as a way to cope (this may or may not be true). Most adults I have come in contact with who identified as part of the culture were content and sure in who and what they were, they were kind and accepting of everyone. From personal experience I think this is because there is an understanding that it is okay to be exactly who and what you are, to like what you like within the culture that doesn't necessarily exist in the general population. I think understanding and embracing yourself as you really are and not as you are supposed to be makes a big difference in the way that others treat you. If you are sure of yourself other people rarely question you.
