The Mirror - Garden
NoWealthNoRuin HK's Territory
A grand courtyard within a hotel on the inside of the border between the territories. It's been taken and retaken so many times that not even the family heads know who originally laid claim to it.

"All right." He nodded, feeling himself relax at the agreement. He still couldn't hide his concern, but his smile returned a little more weakly at the last. "I have to say I'm...pretty confused as to why. Have you argued with someone about that often?"

She tensed at the question, gaze low, her bun was finally starting to fall. "...I just don't like attention." As muchs she loved to dance, she wasn't strong enough, brave enough, goods enough to have that spotlight. And even if she was, if her name got out there, it would draw attention and she'd be hospitalized again...she'd never dance again.

"I take it that there's a very large reason why. One that scares you." He concluded, nearly about to ask what that would be before Mrs. Cha came by to deliver their food. Sedong's portion was nearly twice as much as what she ordered, the older woman placing a hand on her shoulder with a warm smile as she asked if the girl was feeling all right.

She was about to snap at him again to mind his own business before she smelled thr food. As she felt the warm hand on her shoulder, he stomach twisted. She hadn't had anyone seem genuinely concerned for her in years. Turning her attention to the older woman, her frustration and fear faded and she smiled softly, the first real smile she could remember having after moving to the city. "I'm fine, ma'am. I'm sorry for frightening you. But...this is more than I ordered, i think this is someone else's food."

"You're not the first sweet young thing that's come in here half-starved, dear. Right, Heecul?" She shook her head with a smile, giving the girl's arm a gentle squeeze. "Take home what you can't eat. If you can deal with this punk, you're a friend to me."

"Thank you, eomma." Heechul gave a small, genuine smile under the attention, chuckling at the comment. He had warned her that the woman had to adopt every lost soul she found...

"A-ahjumma, I don't have money to pay for all of this." She shook her head. "Please, I don't--" she didn't like owing people, it was what got her in trouble in the first place. And she wasn't intending on letting heechul pay for her meal despite his insistence. "Really...I'd...I'd just like what I ordered..nothing else."

"It's on me, eomma." He added, shaking his head. "I'll settle up my tab tonight."

"Don't worry about it, dear. You're so thin that I would have given you this much if you didn't faint." She added with a soft laugh.

"It's not on him, I can handle my own-" she cut off, hearing the woman, the matter of fact way she spoke. She wouldn't get any words in, the woman just wouldn't listen... but the thought of owing her, of owing Heechul... her fingers trembled in her lap. She dropped her gaze, remembering the last time she'd argued with someone. Her fingers brushed the scar on her arm absently as they shook. She'd just have to use every bit of her money to pay the woman. She could go another couple days without eating after this. She'd survived this far, after all...

Seeing the girl's discomfort, the way she seemed to fidget and almost be afraid of she what she would do, she bent a little bit with a gentle sigh. "I'll be closing up the kitchen soon. If it really makes you that uncomfortable to have someone pay for your food...why don't you help me clean up when you're done eating? A pile of dishes is worth one dinner, right?" She offered, remembering a time when she offered just the same bargain to a much younger and just as fearful boy.

Eyes moving to the older woman's, feeling her eyes burn and seeing the kindness in the woman's face, she thought the words over. After a long moment, she slowly nodded, ducking her head again. "Thats...yeah..yes, ma'am, that seems fair." Her fingers still trembled, but she was more relaxed than she had been just moments before. "Thank you, ahjumma..."

"Don't worry about it, dear. Any time you want, you're welcome to come in. I can always use a few extra hands in the kitchen." She offered, giving the girl's arm a squeeze again before nudging Heechul. "Your friend here is no stranger to having to wash dishes or cook a few things in the back." Telling them to eat well, she went back into the kitchen, leaving the two alone once again.

"...Consider yourself adopted." Heechul concluded with a chuckle.

Flushing softly, feeling a teary smile pull at her lips at the woman's touch, she took a shaky breath and nodded, looking up at her finally. "I feel guilty...like I"m taking advantage of her kindness. I...I won't make this a regular occurrence, it wouldn't be fair for her. I mean, she'd be losing money, wasting food on me, just so I do a couple dishes..." She shook her head. "I feel guilty already with what she brought me now." Biting her lip, she looked down at her food, toying with it with her fork. "A-Adopted? how can she adopt me. She doen'st even know my name. A-and...it's not like I"ll be back much, if at all. This is...mortifying."

"Her son is Cha Hakyeon. There's nothing to take advantage of, if she wanted she could retire tomorrow and know that her great-grandchildren won't even know what it's like to be hungry." He shook his head with a gentle sigh, wondering if the girl had been in the city long enough to know just who was in power. "I wouldn't see it as mortifying. A long time ago, she did the same for me. It took a few years, but I make sure to pay back her kindness every day that I can...because I wouldn't be this successful if she didn't make sure I didn't starve to death. She's the kindest woman in the city. She's doing this because she wants to help everyone she can."

"Cha Hakyeon? Should that mean something to me? Is he some famous actor or something?" She raised a brow, looking up at the man before she pulled the plate a little closer. The woman was set for life, that's what he'd said. She was kind and she was well off...which iddn't make up for taking advantage of her like this, but one time and that would be in. But theidea of paying her back, her heart warmed and the peach pit in her stomach began to shrink. She looked up at him again. "You were like me? I mean..you were...you had a hard time?" She glanced back down to her food. "I can't imagine you being in a situation like this, barely able to buy food...never sleeping, always working so you dn't lose the only job you can get."

"Cha Hakyeon owns the city. Every business, every criminal, all of the police in the city are in his back pocket. He especially loves the arts--you're working for him, all things considered. He owns every theater." At the last, his smile faltered, some of the pain and the exhaustion showing in his face. "I didn't have a home when I met her. I worked in a slum two blocks over as...as a prostitute. Sometimes I delivered packages for local drug dealers. If it wasn't for her, I'd...I'd probably be dead."

"Owns the city-?" she cut off, feeling the fear swell up inside her again. If Cha Hakyeon owned the city, he was the equivalent of Kim SooHyuk... And if he was the equivalent of Kim Soohyuk, his mother couldn't be as good of a person she appeared to be. Her fingers trembled at the thought. What if she got into trouble with thsi family, too? Her stomach twisted, suddenly feeling nauseous as she set her fork down. She wasn't so hungry anymore... She was working for another gangster? Was she trying to getherself killed? It seemed like it some days... "So not much different from your current job, it seems." She nodded slowly, biting her lip. "I'm glad you got out of that kind of lifestyle...ish. I mean you're still kind of there but it's not just sex now, right?"

"Honestly, I prefer Hakyeon to Himchan. He owns the drug rings, the darker criminals, all of the ones that hate the way that the Cha family has tried to rework the city. Hakyeon is an ambitious kid, but his heart's in the right place. He has good ideas for the city." He offered thoughtfully, taking another drink from his glass. "It's the same and it's different. Mostly I can choose not to sleep with a client...and I can afford to refuse clients that make me uncomfortable. Before...I cared about getting enough money to eat. What happened to me as a result didn't matter..."

"You're seriously going to sit there and tell me that this mobster is a good person? He's a gangster." She frowned, pushing the plate away. "And anything to do with gangsters is not a good thing. I don't care who it is." She shook her head, hands still trembling. So...she'd be stuck with two bosses that wanted her dead, it seemed. With a shaky breath, she looked back up at the man across from her. Was he one of them? Did he work for this Cha Hakyeon, then? "...So now you make enough off of your clients that you can be a classy whore, is that it?"

"He isn't a good person. But for a mobster he isn't the worst person. You do know you're sharing a table with an escort, right? Most of my clients work for one side or the other." At the last, his eyes widened before he gave a soft laugh, shaking his head. "I'm very picky about who I agree to sleep with. I'm a classy whore some nights, but most nights I'm mostly emotionless arm candy."

"Then as far as I'm concerned, you're not better than a common drug dealer. Condoning both sides, either side..it's as bad as choosing one." She shook her head, one hand curling into a fist as she felt her trembling worsen. This wasn't good. If he noticed she was shaking he'd ask why. If he asked why he'd figure out she was on the run. If he figured out she was on the run, she'd be sent back to Busan...back to Soohyuk. At the last, hearing the laugh made some of her fear ease just a little. "You're a classy whore some nights. But emotionless? I can't imagine you being emotionless, you're too...flirty." She shook he head. "Do your clients often jjust want you there to keep your mouth shut and look pretty? I thought part of being an escort was the good conversation."
