The Alley
NoWealthNoRuin
Much less intricate than the Rabbit Hole's labyrinth, just a small series of back roads behind the Shooting Star and the other businesses on the block.

"You won't be a burden. And you won't be here forever, just long enough for you to find somewhere you want to be more." He smiled, shaking his head as he led her to the door. "Come on. Lets go get something to eat."

"Until I can figure out how to be on my own again." She nodded with a faint chuckle, brushing her hair from her eyes. "Thank you again...for all of this. I'll pay you back, somehow."

"I'm sure you'll figure it out in no time." He smiled softly. "Even if you do feel like you can be on your own, you don't have to go anywhere until you want to, alright?"

Nodding at the question, she wondered absently just what he had gone through to make him so desperate to go above and beyond what he had to do in order to help her. "I mean it, Officer Han. If there's anything I can do, cleaning, cooking, paying rent, I'm happy to do it. It's the least I can do."

He smiled, wrapping an arm around his waist, holding her to his side to start toward the front of the hospital. "All you have to worry about making sure you're taken care of, alright?"

Surprised by the familiar movement, she found it was too easy to fall into step with him, hand resting on his back to keep her balance. "All right." She said at last, still unsure of how to deal with this. A few hours ago she had feared for her life...not it seemed her life was starting over again.

"When we get home, I'll make sure you have a proper shower, some clothes to sleep in and I want you to promise me you'll rest. Understand?" He smiled softly down at her, fingers careful not to put too much pressure on any wounds.

"That sounds great." She couldn't keep from smiling at the thought, looking up to him once again. "I'll rest, officer. I promise."

Smiling, he brought her to the front desk, discharging her before moving her out to his car. Once he was sure she was comfortable and safe, he moved to the driver's seat. "ARe you in a lot of pain?

Sitting with a wince as she felt her ribs protest the movement, she shook her head. "Not more than I expected. It's...better than it was." She had declined pain medication to keep the hospital costs from being too high, knowing she couldn't pay much on her own and not wanting this man to be burdened by her any more than necessary.

He nodded, tossing her a bottle of pain medication. "Take one every two hours until you're more healed. I mean it." He looked at her, eyes and voice stern before he put the car into drive. "I think you'll like home..eomma is...well, she's perfect."

"What? Where did you get these?" She asked, looking the bottle over as she looked over to him once again. At the last, she hummed softly. "Anyone who would take you in like that would have to be...you must love her a lot."

"I got them from the doctor. She told me you refused medication." He laughed softly, starting don the street and pulling onto the highway. "I do. She's more of a mother to me than anyone I've had before."

"Medication is expensive, officer Han." She reminded him, shaking her head with a small smile. At the last, she thought for a moment before asking, "What happened with your family? Fourteen is such a young age to switch homes like that..."

"Then I guess it's a good thing you don't have to worry about the cost, isn't it?" He chuckled softly, shifting gears and feeling the car lurch a little. He was smiling until he heard the question. Lips pulling into a frown and eyes narrowing on the road, he took a deep breath. "My father is a bad man...my mother died when I was young and my step-mother can't stand me. When I lost my friend...they showed who they truly were because of the incident...and Sooyeon's mother...she took me in."

"I'm sorry." She said quickly, realizing her mistake as she saw the shadow cross his face. "I...shouldn't have brought it up." There was more to this man, she thought, than he showed the world. All of this pain sat beneath the surface of that goofy smile...but had he ever found a way to really heal from it?

"Don't be sorry at all. You just asked a question." He forced a smile, pulling off of the highway and turning down another street. "You're staring."

Apologizing again, she ducked her head, looking at her hands as they rested in her lap instead. "I was just...noticing that your face is easy to read. Your eyes don't light up when you smile like that. Not like when you really mean it."

Brow furrowing, he glanced at her for a moment. "You think my eyes light up? How is it different now? I mean...I"m just smiling, like I always do." He frowned, watching her closely.

"Not like you always do." She shook her head, looking up to him again as her hair fell into her eyes. "When you mean it, it's...almost like you're smiling with your whole body. It kind of...radiates off of you. When you're smiling to make someone believe that you're not unhappy...it's not as bright. I can see that you're faking." After a moment, she added quickly, "I'm sorry, I'm...used to having to read someone's mood. It's habit now."
