It seemed to speed up the process for me when I shot the shit outta him and ran circles around him. But yeah, you have to let him grab you and try to shoot him in the face to make him let you go. Eventually, after that doesn't work for shit, it'll jump to a cutscene where Tenzin saves your ass with a knife.
I am dreading getting up to that boss.
My fave part so far was the bit on the train, where you are going through a jungle and then snowy mountains.
