The metal community is the most loyal and diehard of any fanbase of music I ever seen. Reason it is still kicking and screaming is fifty percent because of the fans. Sure the bands are amazing no doubt there but let us focus how you, the fan, helps out the metal community locally and world wide.
Since the time metal was born the fans tried every route to keep their bands afloat and inform others what has been going on in the community with fanzines and college radio stations. Even though we have now reached a new high peak of communicational technology with computers we still see websites and online radio programs keeping metal fans informed. It just comes to show metalheads no matter what genres or bands they listen to, they are the most passionate fans in the world when it comes to this musical artform.
So back to the question at hand what do you peesonally do to help the metal community?
Do you help out with a fanzine?
Do a college radio show?
Go to local concerts to support new bands?
Advertise for bands?
Anything else you can think of you helping the community post and share.
I don't do much to be honest. Go to concerts and buy merch at concerts. Every now and then I buy a few albums. Still, I don't care about the 'metalcommunity', or any community for that matter.
I go to local concerts whenever I can. If I really like a metal band then I'll buy their CDs and occasionally their merch. I also write album reviews and press releases for an alternative music e-zine which helps to promote both signed and underground metal bands.
First of all, I'm a consistent CD/Shirt/Patch/Anything with a band logo on it buyer. I think that in itself is a huge contribution to the metal community.
Other than that, I go to any concert I get around here, and I've helped promote/vendor tickets for many bands. The latest was Agalloch, and it was a beastly show.
“I linger yet with Nature, for the night hath been to me a more familiar face than that of man; and in her starry shade of dim and solitary loveliness, I learn’d the language of another world.”
If by "community" we mean other metal fans, I'm inclined to agree.

I vomit on people's hair in mosh pits so they have to wash it or they just have revolting puke hair and don't get served in the shops so they starve to death because of their pukey hair.
Moon, but isn't that only the case in the US? Europe is pretty dedicated, open minded and always friendly! But then again, all great metalbands are from Europe :')
What I do for the community? Buy CD/Vinyl/Shirts/Merchandise, go to at least 1 or 2 concerts a week, write reviews/interviews for a dutch folkmetalsite, I'm playing in a band myself, I arrange gigs and I help to promote smaller bands
I've spoken to and dealt with my fair share of maniacs from all over the world and its a matter of meeting the right people I guess. IMO the Dutch scene is filled to the brim with absolute drunken fuckwads but it's the same in London and most likely everywhere else. When you get to the people that keep more to themselves and smaller circles it gets more interesting.
I'm going to start a record label/promotions company when I have the money to.Even if it runs at a loss,my local music scene sucks.Someone has to do something about it
I agree with Bart. I also believe that people are ignorant idiots in general and that does not exclude metal fans. To be honest, I barely have contact with metal fans these days, but most seem to be 'different' for the sake of just being different. No, they are not different, nor unique and like almost everyone else they show signs of herd mentality. If I for example met someone into Norse mythology who isn't into metal, I'd think it's more genuine that if a metal fan is, because just seem to think it's cool or whatever.
simply by listening to my favourite bands and then telling my friends about them, It's a shame, but here, I can't really seem to find any orignial metal records, hence I have to download it, still listening to it is promoting it.
Yeah I am awesome; thank you for pointing that out
Slayerx: Fukk off you Ipod Whore
ndru: Yes you are right
exexexXexexex: The AUS scene will be the last scene to be raped by the Ipod downloading whore bags.
AUS metal has some true underground material that will never be pikked up by the hipster download generation.
In regards to the post: What are you doing for the metal community?
I'm going to Berlin to the NWN Fest; what will everyone else be doing?
Downloading MP3s wishing they were there.
If any of you Kunts are going to be there I'll meet you; face to face
Your favourite band still sucks
But you will end up: 'Downloading the musik anyway and call yourself a fan because you are gay and will still be gay cause you're gay' - Seth Putnam
I'm an idiot who can't use the promotion thread and I need to post my services in a metal community thread which has nothing to do with the thread other than to promote me trying to make money off you.
Being Grim in Finnish Lappland winter weather. I have come up with new material for the upcomming Immortal album as requested by Abbath and Demonaz.
The album is called: Frozen Black Sunday. The music was co-writtern by Dave Vincent as I wanted to take Immortal in a new music direction.
