The metal community is the most loyal and diehard of any fanbase of music I ever seen. Reason it is still kicking and screaming is fifty percent because of the fans. Sure the bands are amazing no doubt there but let us focus how you, the fan, helps out the metal community locally and world wide.
Since the time metal was born the fans tried every route to keep their bands afloat and inform others what has been going on in the community with fanzines and college radio stations. Even though we have now reached a new high peak of communicational technology with computers we still see websites and online radio programs keeping metal fans informed. It just comes to show metalheads no matter what genres or bands they listen to, they are the most passionate fans in the world when it comes to this musical artform.
So back to the question at hand what do you peesonally do to help the metal community?
Do you help out with a fanzine?
Do a college radio show?
Go to local concerts to support new bands?
Advertise for bands?
Anything else you can think of you helping the community post and share.
I used to make mix CDs of stuff I thought people would like in high school, and most of them would then go out and buy whatever they liked.
I've been going to a few concerts for the past 9 months. Flight of the Valkyries, Paganfest, Gates of Slumber/Premonition 13/Weed is Weed, Saxon, Sabaton, Mystic-Force.
Right now I'm pestering Char with songs from youtube of newer bands she might like.

That reminds me slightly of the tape trading exhange during the thrash years.
Hope you enjoy yourself at paganfest. Would go but i shouldn't do any traveling because my nephew is extremely sick.
I have an online college radio specialty show with a couple friends of mine that we do usually every monday when we are in session. My last semester is coming up and let me tell ya it feels good to run your own radio show that been part of the college for about 2 years with over 300 fans.
We play the classics for the first 30 minutes, metal genre for the week where we play bands of a specific genre, metal covers, modern and present metal bands, local acts, and finally live cuts. It is fun since an communication group is giving us grant money to start our own non college radio.
That is how i support the music i love but best way is buying their music, merch, and going to concerts.
Paganfest was in March. It was great. I love Turisas. I wasn't sure about Huntress, the only song I could hear online at the time was Eight of Swords. But John and I both liked them once we saw them. Jill actually almost went in the men's room. We were sitting right by the entrance because I can't stand the entire time and there was nowhere else. She also threatened to kick a guy in the face because he wouldn't stop grabbing her when she was on stage. I also found a promotional compilation on the sofa after most people had left.
I want to go to the concert in Virginia with Moonsorrow, Tyr, Metsatoll (did I spell that right?), Korpiklaani, Burning Shadows, and Yesterday's Saints, but it's going to be impossible.

It seems that simply buying the albums of bands and not illegally downloading their music music nowadays helps them a lot more than it used to since a lot of people prefer to download...
I support by buying merchandise, spending money on albums and do talk quite a lot about music with many people that I meet - it's always nice to see what others listen to, and hopefully a lot of people feel this way too!
I buy cassettes and berate people who don't go to every show t the local dive bar. I also spend my spare time practicing tremolo picking and knitting patches onto my denim vest.

Haha! And it usually works! Still not sure about that Burning Shadows album I got though, there was one song I really liked and the others just okay, not very memorable. Maybe I should try a different album.

I went to local shows as well as advertised events when I lived in Houston. Now that I live in Tucson, I haven't managed to make it to a local show yet due to money situations, but have looked up some of the local bands that are here.

I buy the albums rather than download them. And whilst I am dressed like a badass, I smile and act polite to people in order to erode any narrow-minded stereotypes the media may perpetuate about the metal community.
