I'm just curious as to who does more unusual forms of exercise. Right now, I do a combination of pole dance (but in a class that's more about building strength and flexibility than actually dancing, as well as aerial yoga, and a few classes that are a mix of the two. I love both, and would like to try some other ideas...

I've been pole dancing on and off for like 5 years. I've finally found an instructor who is more about the fitness than the dancing, and it's made SO much difference. I hate it when I get to class to find out that she's away and someone else is filling in lol

I'd love to do pole dancing classes, but the only places that do them 'round here are members-only gyms :-(
I'm starting an army bootcamp fitness class on saturday...I like the idea of an exercise class outside & it should be less boring than the gym..

I'm surprised they don't have the option to sign up for a single class to see if you like it (pretty much every place around here that offers them does that) - you might want to try giving them a call, and see what they say.

It's like, to go to the class, you need to be a member of the whole gym, 'cos classes are inclusive?
And I already get free gym membership where I work, so I don't want to pay to join another gym for one class..

Weird! The places around here that offer pole dance classes do that pretty much exclusively, although the one that I go to has been branching out a bit...

Mine is primarily pole, but they offer a handful of other classes as well (suspension yoga, a variety of cardio classes, pilates, and a few strength classes, which I adore).

I think it's cos there are ALOT of gyms in my city, so I guess they try and compete by offering stuff that's abit different..
Strip clubs sometimes offer them, but I've heard they're kind of part class, part skeazy recruitment deals, like 'oh wow, you're really good, did you think about earning some extra money....?' lol

I'm surprised there isn't anywhere that specializes in pole classes - they're popping up everywhere lately!

What kind did you get? I've got a classic x-pole, and I'm thinking about eventually upgrading to the sport model.

I've never even heard of that one, but it sounds pretty spendy for a beginner pole...can you invert on it?

I'll have to look that one up - mostly I'm thinking about upgrading because my current pole is stainless and the grip on it sucks, and I want to size down from a 2" diameter to 1.75...

I've never looked at their DVD's, but I took a class at their Toronto studio a few years ago and kinda hated it - they're WAY into choreography, while the other studios here work more on strength building. It's definitely awesome for upper body and core strength though!

For those of you who do pole, have you seen Pole Dance Dictionary?

I'm having fun looking for moves that I've never tried, but think that I could probably do (I'm not nearly as flexible as the dancers in the pics).

I finally nailed the cross knee release today and am feeling ambitious.

Oh man. I do not miss the extended sitting - I still get some pretty nasty bruises from that on occasion. I was working on the layback last night, and I look like I've been attacked by a meat-tenderizer wielding gnome.

I wish I still had the pics of my killer back-of-the-thigh bruise...it was like 2" by 6" and started out BLACK.

The tops of my feet are pretty much perma-bruised from all the climbing and stuff. I don't entirely have enough room for mine (I can't do a lot of the big, dramatic spins), but it's awesome to have for working on the more static strength stuff.

I definitely recommend belly dancing. It really works out leg and abdominal muscles o_o

Just a short comment...I'm a personal trainer and if you would do plyometrics and agility traing you can be killer in flexibility plus it works your core as well

I do the floowing type old school stuff:

1) the bent press(it can be done with a barbell):

2) the one arm snatch( minus that guys staggering around):

Suffer? You have my word you won't suffer, because the dead don't suffer!

I took a few bellydance classes and really didn't like it, but I recently discovered an affinity for rock climbing - I think mostly I just like being up off the ground.

I might give aerial silks and/or lyra another go if I can find a better place to take classes...

I've always just called it silks, but I don't know if there's a technical name for it. I never got a chance to try that, since the place I was trying to go only had one set, and it was booked for all the times that I could get there.

I'm guessing it's probably similar, but probably uses more arm/leg and a little less core, since you'd be able to use momentum to invert, in a way that you really can't on the pole.

I've been doing aerial yoga for a few months, and I definitely feel that way more in my arms and shoulders, but I'm not sure how similar that would be.

I don't really have an "unusual" routine - just a combination of specialized workouts, cardio, and some yoga here and there. But I love dancing for fun, especially all that gothy arm swirly stuff when I'm getting dressed in the morning.

I mean, it's really not unusual for most people, but I'm a collegiate cheerleader. Which is kind of weird for someone like me, I suppose. I get a lot of my exercise through that.

I pokemon train for my exercise diddle
I put on my pokewalker and try to get at least 10,000 steps in a day in addition to whatever i'm doing at the gym. idk if that counts as unusual.
