Wanting to get into real industrial (read: old industrial)

So I picked up an SPK album on a whim recently, and I'm quite enjoying it. It's made me think I should get into older industrial stuff, but I have pretty much no idea where to start off.

Anything is acceptable really. I've heard of Coil, Einsturzende Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle and others like that, but I've not really got any idea of where to start off.

In other words, what's the best entry level old industrial stuff?

Inb4 people suggest early Combichrist or KMFDM.

I think about DAF, Agrumh, Skinny Puppy, A split Second, Pankow, Borghesia. We also have Nitzer EBB, Front 242, Frontline Assembly they started long ago.

Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, NON, Monte Cazazza, SPK and Z'EV are the canonical Industrial Culture Handbook choices.

TG and Cabaret Voltiare (avoid the Cabs' post-1982 material) are the most popular and accessible of those bands. Z'EV is the least interesting of the bunch, in my opinion.

There are also some current bands like Ke/Hil that play real industrial, so no need to restrict yourself to just the oldies.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned The Klinik yet.

Forestspirit99: Has the Klinik made a song called Civil war or something like that? Have a faint memory from my younger days but I can't find it.

Might try out some Whitehouse while you're at it.

Thats more EBM.

MrsYoda,

I don't know of any tracks by The Klinik called Civil War. Unless you mean this one:

Nighthood, if it's old industrial you're after you could also check out some of the Suicide Commando demos from the mid-80s.

That's a canon I have little time for. It needs the addition of ClockDVA, Nurse With Wound, Test Dept and a few others.

Forestspirit99, Not that song, thanks for trying.

TheOvermind001, Some of it may be EBM but that's also a form of industrial. Well that's another discussion :-).

I forgott Pouppe Fabrikk.

All of these look like good bands, but I'm still at a bit of a loss of where to start. Are there any particular albums I should look at? Because I imagine a lot of the bands have some real wank in amongst the quality.

I got "Horse Rotorvator" by Coil and I've been loving that, for what it's worth.

That's a good start. Try these as well-

Nurse With Wound- "Homotopy to Marie"

This was their fifth album, and their first genuinely great one. It's long, long songs- practically ambient in places and incredibly unnerving.

Current 93- "Dogs Blood Rising"

C93 at their most aggressive, and one of the most evil-sounding albums ever released.

Test Dept- "The Unacceptable Face of Freedom"

Practically the benchmark of what Old-school should sound like. Highly politicised, clattering sound collages. A great album.

The Young Gods- "The Young Gods"

Not exactly Old-school- more the album that blew the entire genre onto the next step in 1987. Essential listening.

Really liked Current 93 and Test Dept. Nurse With Wound are interesting, but may take a few more listens to appreciate properly.

The Young Gods didn't really catch me much. Msybe not my thing.

Thanks for the suggestions.

You could start with the compilation albums.

Cabaret Voltaire - The Golden Moments Of Cabaret Voltaire, The Living Legends, The Original Sound of Sheffield '78/'82
Monte Cazazza - The Worst of Monte Cazazza
Clock DVA - Collective
Einsturzende Neubauten - Strategies Against Architecture, Kalte Sterne
Nurse With Wound - Livin' Fear of James Last
SPK - Auto-Da-Fé
Throbbing Gristle - Greatest Hits: Entertainment Through Pain, The Taste of TG

Skinny Puppy, Ministry (Not one of my personal favorites...but to each their own), Die Warzau, Front Line Assembly, KMDFM, Ohgr, Rotersand...
If I am wrong about any of these being industrial, I apologize. I am no expert on the subject. I only know what music I like.

Test Department, its been a long while since I heard them, unpleasant stuff to say the least, but in a good way.
