Me and my bestie is doing a two person band thing.... ( Mainly coz we know eachother better then pulling randoms in) But we have came across a problem..... We both can;'t read music notes..... we can come up with tunes and stuff like that but writing the notes down is like banging our heads on a brick wall repeatly.... is it vital to know how to read music notes or nah?
Why i ask is coz we plan on doing a first recording next week or the week after that..... Depends when we have no exams and when she hasn't got horse stuff going on...i bet ya like how the hell ya gonna do it two people ...... ummm idk yet ... we always manage to pull things off when we shouldn't be able to so really this is like a muck around and see where we get .... :3... any advice would be great thnxs
I'm a classically trained musician/composer and I never use sheet music unless I'm trying to get someone else to play a part - and even then, only half the time. Lots of musicians are just like you, so instead of sheet music I'll just show them how the part goes. No problem.
I've been in a band for three years now, I am a drummer and don't really need to know how to read music as long as I understand a few basics and my guitarist knows chords and notes, but he can't read music and we have done just fine. Unless you want to have your music written down for documentation, I don't think it's necessarily that important.
As others have said, you don't NEED to know how to read and write music especially if you're doing something more along the lines of rock. Except for very serious people and/or certain genres of music, it's not necessary although it can be a useful skill.
It doesn't take that long to learn how to read music either.
Sometimes it doesn't really matter if you can't read sheet music. As long as you have a good connection with the rest of your band and you can manage to explain how the song needs to go in a way each member can get it easily you're fine. Thats how I've done it for years and years now, even though I partially can read music.
