Lately I've been into Black Metal a lot and I have had several bands in which I either did guitar or bass.
Now I've just started my own Black Metal project but I'm having troubles with vocals. I lose my voice constantly, or end up coughing my throat out.
Any thoughts on how to improve my vocals without ruining my voice?
Note: My main inspiration for vocals is Carach Angren.
The screaming is not easy to explain as a technique, however, is derived from a positioning muscle and by directing a flow of air particular. The fact remains that the 'technique' of hand makes use of a positioning of the diaphragm in the art that speech is deemed to have failed. The secret is in knowing how to use the diaphragm ...
I personally have learned in 2 months ... and now singing black metal from about 8 years ...
Black metal vocals especially are kind of wierd to do. You have to try to let air come out of your nose as well as your mouth while you scream. You gotta put your sinuses into it so to speak. I know its sounds strange but give it a shot.
Let me know how it works out for you.
Cheers for your advice guys.
I'll try it out.
How much time per day shoud I practice? I don't want to ruin my voice, but neither do I want to wait for years before my vocals are good.
I cant really give you an exact time just practace until your voice hurts then stop and let it heal. You will eventually get use to it and it wont hurt at all. I worked at a haunted woods last year and used my metal vocals to scare people. I was screaming for 12 hours every weekend and i never fucked up my voice.
but if it does start to hurt alot you can drink green tea with honey and lemon that soothes the throat and speeds up the healing process.
I would not recommend trying until my throat hurts ... absolutely ... you could ruin your vocal chords ... a little at a time ... then by the time you can increase the life ...!
My advice is you MUST use your diaphragm while screaming. I learned that the hard way and I lost my voice for about 3 days to a week. Then I learned to use my diaphragm, and it helped me to produce more powerful screams and as well as screams that aren't hard on the throat. When done properly, you can definitely belt out some kickass vocals. Hope I helped! m/
