Like most things... it's become (sorry for the pun) a good "brand wagon" to get on...
It used to be a really controversial thing, for example the album Ice T got 'made' by, was not allowed any air time (both for TV & Radio) in America... yet, it still managed to go Platinum (with world wide sales eventually going Triple Platinum as I recall).... this was way before the days of the Internet.
And then the problems started, despite most of Ice T's output at that time is focused mainly on how mindless and frankly short-lived being a "Gangsta" was (and is TBH)... Some people in the music industry (AKA money grabbing parasites) decided that "rap" was the new big thing and started to cash in on that idea as much as they could.
Move on a decade or so from that point and what have you got? We've got a shit-wad of people who have all the Ass a'tude (90% of which is 'fabricated' by the team of PR pond-scum they're surrounded by)you can think of becoming overnight successes because skinny white kids with lots of money to burn get told that "G"= Awesome by MTV and other shit-pedlars of the music industry.
