I fail to see why everyone hates them so much. I mean, sure, every single riff on Sehnsucht was EXACTLY THE SAME, but it's still a catchy album, and I like their other stuff.

Maybe its not hate so much, but just a genuine concensus among a great deal of rivets, that Rammstein is severely overrated.
The electronic elements in Rammstein have never been that good, or cutting edge, for the fact they use a human drummer, its seems odd most of their songs use a 4/4 standard beat. The actual "industrial" sounds they used in some songs(when they can actually be arsed using them) were allways kind of trivial.
Simplicity can work for bands, but in the face of so many better industrial acts who meticulously sculp layer upon layer, filled with a rich, bold striking of synth work, superb electronic arrangements....well Rammstein...kind of comes up bare.
Personally I think a lot of their guitar riffs sound great, but lets get down to the nitty gritty. There are blatantly, with total honesty(noted here that my opinion is still subjective), that there are much better industrial rock bands out there. And obviously much better German bands.
But lets give them some kudos, from the footage I`ve seen and an overwhelming response from thoe who have attended their concerts, Rammstein put on a much better live show then probably 90 percent of industrial bands, not just in regards to the budget either.
Serious industrial fans can get really annoyed when industrial "newbs" state Rammstein is like Germany`s finest, or the best industrial band ever. They get sick of hearing about them due to the fact that major label, main stream success(helped via soundtrack supervisors) means Rammstein are one of the few Industrial(ish/tinged) bands that are exposed to mainstream, general public.
I don`t hate them, I just honestly have not heard a song from them in like, maybe 8 years that honestly made me think they were a great band in the studio. They sort of bore me too.
But hey, David Lynch loves them and I`d much rather see Rammstein doing well commercially then the vast majority of other mainstream rock/metal bands.
I like them though I've always regarded them as more metal than industrial.
I guess I'm part of that 'industrial newbs' group that shitkicker mentioned. I was (and in some ways I still am) mostly into metal and Rammstein was one of the first industrial bands I got into. As far as live performances go they are definitely one of the best industrial bands to watch.
Anyone can have seen them live due to that live dvd with the good audio recording that came out quite awhile ago.
In this day and age however, one needs only go to youtube to see if a band is any good live as far as performance, theatrics, energy, props, stage prescence, lighting etc etc. We can see is an audience actually gets into a band`s live shows by the way they act.
If a band is crappy as far as peformance goes, well we can blatantly just go online and see it ourselves before we commit money to investing our entertainment funds in a live show.
Trickier, however is to tell if a band sounds good live as most cellphone recordings understandably have terrible audio quality, in that case, it depends on actually seeing them yourself, or waiting for a live album/dvd to hit the internet.
Simple as that.
One last thing, going off people`s subjective opinions from actually experiencing live shows from bands is not allways a good idea, because you get fanboys at times who think a mediocre gig is amazing because its on of their favourite bands, even if the pa system and live audio engineer were shit. For example, one of my Dutch friends was raving about a recent Emilie Autumn concert, stating how amazing it was, I looked up that very show on youtube and all I saw was some nappyheaded bitch slowly walking around a stage twirling some shitty tassle thing, could not even see any band members performing either, that was her shitty perfomance that was so amazing. Fuck people`s raving opinions, via any medium of the net you can, listen/watch the live performances for yourself and decide.
