Alright so I may get some speeches from some people that i really should just take it out; but it's not that easy for me. I rely on tattoos and piercings to feel good about myself; and plus when you have had something for so long it basically becomes apart of who you are.
Anyways. Today I had my 2nd interview for this same particular job. I popped the question about tattoos and he noticed i had a tongue piercing; he claimed my tattoos that are on my arms would be okay as they are not too big and are not offensive; but i "may" be asked to cover them (oh okay no big deal) But then..... he said I WAS NOT allowed to have a tongue ring AT ALL.
My tummy dropped. I have had this tongue ring for 4 years now and have not had a single problem with it; I cherish it so much. I am so mad at myself that I didn't get a retainer and wear it before hand...but now I am tempted to just buy a couple types of retainers and try that out.
Risks? Well i know that if I decide to take out my tongue ring; I personally feel it would be a pretty big risk of infection. There is a risk i would lose my job if I decide to put in a retainer; but this job isn't where i am staying. I could only be here for a month....as basically we go where my boyfriend gets a job offer as his jobs offer 20$ starting wage...and I find it a bit ridiculous to lose a piercing at a place that i may only be there for not even a year.
LONG STORY SHORT! >.<
What are your opinions on this?
What Retainers are best to use? I personally have a very thin tongue and get fit pretty small jewelry in, but i am not sure what the size is? (if anyone can help me there would be great)
Last but not least; what type of retainer would be best to use?
Side Note: Would there be anyway that for my orientation I could try and not have the top of the retainer in? has that ever worked? cause I have a feeling they will ask for me to show them

Okay, this post is going to consist of a bunch of tiny paragraphs which deal with different parts of your post:
If your boss has told you that you're not allowed to have a tongue piercing, retainer or not, you take it out. Job trumps mod, every time.
If you're not willing to lose the piercing, find a job that allows it. It is a pretty fantastically stupid idea to try and hide it. All retainers are visible and all of them require you to wear the whole thing.
Also, taking the jewellery out of a healed piercing doesn't increase the risk of infection at all and I'm not really sure where you got that information. If you're really worried, treat it like a fresh piercing and you'll be fine.
Now to the important one: We all feel great about our mods. We all love them and find them aesthetically pleasing. We all want to keep them. But if you NEED your mods to feel good about yourself, you need to get yourself some help. This is not a judgement, this is not a rude comment, this is a fact.
Mod hat time for a second: Please don't centre your text, it makes your post much trickier to read.
I just find it silly that if im doing Stock and I don't talk to customers directly? I mean I could understand if im like a cashier or something; but i asked for stocking positions; I mean i might even be over-night stocking.
and I never said that I need them to be happy; They just have become apart of who i am; and having them for so long and having to take them out makes me feel incredibly weird. All i will end up doing is replacing the tongue ring with another piercing or tattoo that is hidden. And yeah i could get it re-pierced or what not; i am simply irritated that the meijer down the road allows them... and as I said before i may not even be at this job for even a year...all depends on where my boyfriend lands. im finished with college in 10 weeks. Just kinda need some money to help his parents out.
Even if it's a silly rule, it's still a rule. Working for someone means respecting their rules, and if that includes removing your tongue ring you don't have a choice. If you really can't do that, you need to find a job that will allow you to keep it. In this forum we're firmly against lying about mods, especially to parents or employers.
Also, you said you rely on them to feel good about yourself. Which is synonymous with needing them to feel good about yourself. If this isn't what you mean, feel free to alter your post and I'll cut that part out of mine, but it's definitely what you said, and it raised a red flag that I felt should be addressed.
Yes i know >.< I am not one for being changed of what i like or whats on my body; but I do know in the end at one point things have to change.
as far as the whole feel good thing; yes. There was a point where they helped me feel "prettier" per-say but what i meant basically as they do help me perk up my self esteem. I wasn't meaning like im some crazy person who things im ugly if i dont have a piercing; I just hate that i have to lose one that i have had so long.
and yes i understand; I am sorry that what i posted sounded wrong or whatever. I still have a lot to think about and i do appreciate you taking the time to write to me in this forum post.
I apologise if I came across as more "grar attack" than "kindly advice", but there's no inflection in text :P
If it helps though: All of the moderators here are very visibly modded, and we've all been gainfully employed looking the way we choose to look. There are definitely jobs out there that will allow mods as long as you're well-presented. If you're only looking for short-term work, you may well be better off pumping gas and keeping the piercing.
Yes its okay though ^^ At first I was like "Are they yelling at me?" O_O then i was like.."yeah, no most likely not"
Anywhos! I know what you mean. I personally have this HUGE things against companies who try and make everyone the same. I have the "Everyone looks the way they are because it makes them happy" attitude; so therefore in my mind im going
"Yeah for me to have to take out a piercing just so someone else doesn't get offended sounds like a load of crap" and i know we have all been there at one point in time.
Sure i still have my septum (which is EXTREMELY easy to hide) and i have my Gauges (which i bought flesh plugs for those just in case) but it just... ARG! I have lost 3 lip piercings from either infection or the piercer doing it wrong...and to lose something when nothing is wrong with it...just That would be like me telling him to throw his phone away even though it has nothing wrong with it

Your going to find that it's not really an attitude where a company wants everyone to look and be the same.
It's just that companies don't want to deal with the hassle that comes from their clients pertaining to how you decide to decorate your body. Some cases it's for a safety reason, you never know what you will be working around and having piercings could run your risk to accidents that much higher.
I'll give you one small example from when I worked with public. When I worked at a coffee shop there were very strict rules, no one complained or made remarks about how I presented myself. But when I worked at a gas station after that and there were no rules, I have never heard so many complaints/remarks before. Now people would seriously hold up the line for extended periods of time asking me questions about my visible piercings.
It's easier to do my job without having people question me about such irrelevant things.
Even now working construction I still can't have majority of my jewelry in, but that all comes down to who and where I'm working.
