I know in hip hop especially the more death/evil type of shit, people basically despise the commercial rappers and groups. They say the mainstream rappers arent true to the culture and therefore hated.
Is there a similar deal in metal?
that's an awful lot of misdirected hatred. There's loads of great bands that make it to the mainstream, just because they get radio airplay doesn't mean they "sold out"
No, no, not 100 percent are terrible. Radio in general does not mean mainstream either. I like those pirate music stations or the new college stations.I despise anything clear channel on the radio.
Anything? But you know that a lot of bands go from college radio to mainstream radio if they're good, right? Being an underground band barely pays the bills.
I think I can live on Twinkies and coffee, kidding. I know there's huge living expenses, especially in NYC. It could be possible to live okay while staying low. And that I know of, college radio leads to bigger places and deals, etc. I refuse to turn into other stations...damn you clear channel. Do you know what clear channel is?
I don't even know what clear channel is, tbh. I hate bands that change styles for the money, or were classics back in the day but now are only making albums for cash *cough*metallica*cough*motley crue*cough* but simpley being well known and in the mainstream doesn't make someone bad, just seems like most of the artists that make it there are crap, mainstream or not.
Clear channel is the biggest of the biggest radio station garbage dump. They buy other stations and have music on repeat for 15 minutes or so. They basically killed radio, somewhat. They really tell you, the artist, band or musician -- on how things go. Frank damn Zappa had a fit with these guys years ago... (didn't even know)
There's a huge debate on that since MTV started at that time which many blame for teh demise of music but it was definetly teh best decade for underground music! 8)
"I prefer 80s over 90s. I never experienced the 80s though."
Said it before and will keep saying it, some good ol' elitism tends to scare off at least a handful of tards and as long as it keeps doing so its all good to me. I'm much more annoyed by the pretentious "I'm so open minded" attitude displayed in online communities.
Because being open minded and honest about what you like against the dominating opinion is such a bad thing? I'm not so sure it's pretense to be a little off-put by people spouting off their mouths when you mention liking a band they despise. If I'm not inclined to berate someone for liking something I don't listen to, I find it silly others can't extend the same courtesy.
Then why did you ask? I don't see them as a joke to Metal, if you wanna laugh then try some Bullet For My Valentine. I hear their the rage of hilarity. Not to mention their music blows.
I tried listening to slipknot and these "other" bands. I don't see anything amazing. Surprised they still get talked about... I wouldn't say 100 percent mainstream is bad. Its just the same type of stuff being recycled...over and over and over and over....

When it gets to the point where there are facebook pages promoting "open minded metalheads" and people on forums talking about how much cooler they are for being open minded, yeah, I consider most so called open minded people pretentious. They whine about and bash elitism (which is their eyes is often defined as 'having a strong opinion on the shitty metalcore bands I so dearly love') yet they aren't any better themselves. None of them are truly open minded and most of them display more of an elitist attitude than those who they call elitist.
You guys wanna a good example of harsh critique towards Metal bands. Take a stroll down Japanese Metal Lane, most of the bands in that country are bashed for just calling themselves metal.
