I know in hip hop especially the more death/evil type of shit, people basically despise the commercial rappers and groups. They say the mainstream rappers arent true to the culture and therefore hated.
Is there a similar deal in metal?
Its particularly bad in rap music, people laugh at hip hop because of how utterly retarded mtv makes it look. Oh yeah, punk? I think boston has a fairly high punk population so I get a good amount of real punk culture and the mainstream is so far gone from its roots. Music and money can do terrible shit.

Everyone I grew up (in Mass) with listened to metal and rap, so when nu-metal came around it was nothing nu.
But typically metalheads are the biggest dicks, next to 'hardcore' fans, about other kinds of music. And mostly, that's only on message boards. IRL, most metalheads I know will listen to almost anything and don't JUST listen to metal.
As far as commercial music, we could give a fuck if a band is still popular, as long as you like the sound, it's fine. It's just most of the SHIT you hear on the radio is just that. SHIT. Bands like Hinder and Puddle of Muck and Nickelshit, it's just fucking annoying. I'd be thrilled to hear a real metal band on the radio again....and I mean metal, not A7X. That's glam.

True to culture? What culture? Is there anything to learn then from the culture that goes along with the name 'metal'? Other then do drugs,beer,die young and stupid I mean. And this question could be asked about almost every other possible music culture there is.

Not nearly enough! If the kids would stop distracting the metal community by pretending metalcore is metal then metalheads could get back to denigrating actual metal bands.
I'm not entirely sure why anyone argues about anything, We all know Emmure has produced albums that have been ground breaking in each subgenre of Metal. They are both popular, kvltasfvck, and underground.
Without Emmure I'm not sure what our community would be like, probably in shambles.
In hip hop/rap theres a whole lot of 'fuck commercial hip hop', 'culture vultures', 'hip hop is dead' shit going on. even on that Im not sure how many people are aware whats happening to the genre. metal seems to be in a healthy state compared to rap
There's a decent amount of bands in Northern Ireland, a good few Doom metal and sludge bands, Thrash bands and Death Metal bands. Sure most of the R 'N R(you probably know what bands I'm talking about) suck arse, but there are some decent bands like
Mainstream metal aint that bad, when you take into consideration the equivalents in other niche crowd music styles, fucking hell you should hear what your average Industrial dj spins at clubs...fucking futurepop, thats pretty fucking gay, even actual bum banditos would think it sounded gay. Metal has some gay ass shit, but we have djs that actually spin stuff like vnv(hiv*)nation.
At least the gayest sounding mainstream metal, be it newbmetal or otherwise has at least the slightest hint of heaviness. Ever think to yourself the kids all like shit today and they embarass the true roots of the metal movement, you should fucking count your lucky stars you don`t have the equivalent of futurepop playing in your clubs and headling festivals.
Rivets are getting more prone to arse bandito antics in our clubs these days, pretty soon, all the kids will shave their eyebrows like tranny fanny drag queens and we`ll hear an entire playlist from a dj consisting of nothing but light ebm with some faggoty, earnest, girly vocals, complete with faggoty synth hooks.
Time like this, metal is looking alot more attractive, I might have to pull a turn coat.
