What goth bands/ songs would you recommend for a goth newbie?

I am (like a few) new somewhat to the subculture. I am aware of the "known" bands ( Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Marilyn Manson). But I wish to completely immerse myself (and others) with the knowledge of ALL the bands of the subculture. Please share your thoughts/ ideas on this topic.

I would recommend "The Danse Society" "The March Violets" "The Rose of Avalanche" as well as "Dead Can Dance" I've found I like them a bit a more than the "known" bands you and a lot often mention (not to say they aren't all brilliant themselves.)

A tip of the hat to you for looking back to some classics in your immersion into Gothdom.

Ignorance is bliss... when it's not fatal.

First and foremost, Manson is not Goth in the slightest. His work is metal.

I would definitely suggest Christian Death, Virgin Prunes, Specimen and Alien Sex Fiend for some of the classics if you haven't already. Less well known but still good includes Bat Nouveau, 13th Moon, Christ vs Warhol, Scarlet's Remains, Cinema Strange, Deadchovsky, Eat Your Makeup, Mephisto Walz, The Cemetary Girlz.

And let it not be forgotten: Manson is not Goth.

The Manson argument is OLD.

The music is classified as alternative metal or industrial metal. And as far as I know, discussing Manson on the metal and industrial forums is against the rules, much like it is on this forum. However, if someone feels the need to talk about that fugly douchenozzle, they may be able to do so on the alternative rock forum.

Manson is rock. That's why the thread about him is in the Rock forum.

Ok, I'm sorry for bringing up Manson. Again, I'm a neophyte to this sort of stuff.

Hey, at least you're admitting you're wrong. That's the first step :P The goth community can be very unforgiving in that aspect.

haha, yeah. Although, becoming the goth/ hipster that I am, I'm sort of curious about obscure goth bands, sort of like the stuff almost nobody knows about.

When Bauhaus found out about this music called "goth" invented by Marilyn Manson they used their time machine to go back to 1979 so they could claim credit for it! rofl

Goth was a "TERM" created in late 1979 by the British Press for a bunch of New Wave Bands with a dark sound. Bauhaus & Siouxie and The Banshees were categorized as New Wave up until the point. Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus was a Tongue & Cheek piss take up yours to the British Press which got taken seriously. Other terms which floated around were Positive Punk/Post Punk and Art Rock.

Marilyn Manson has never been Goth but his Vocal Style like the same which influenced early Goth Bands can be noted. Personally 1980 Was the year "Goth" started to kick in.

We have Hipsters in the UK one Minute they are anti Synth and whinging how great The Beatles are, next Minute they are Electroclash - Electro Indie a few years later Electro House / Electro Rock / Shoegaze and now Art Rock again. They follow trend but lack any substance and are normally Snobs. There is nothing Alternative about these people some ok songs appear from them time to time but they live seem to be trying to hard to be something they are not the whole time.

Goth used to be a Chart scene in UK up until early 90's. I don't blame anyone classing Marilyn Manson as Goth as that's the media Portrayal also his Image on certain Album's is not typically Metal and has a lot in Common with Goth and Glam acts of the past. What I say to you WireFireLighter is like what you like we all have different tastes. Most the Bands that we're classed as Goth we're actually Art Rock/Punk anyway. Goth/Hipster Culture would be an interesting one, I have met a few of this type over the last 14 years they exist lol

I personally think that the concept of a Goth/ Hipster culture would indeed be intriguing since they contradict each other, yet they are in common in that they deal with the idea of being different from the usual stream of conformity and are about self expression. But, I'm also equally grateful for the feedback I have received! It all has been helpful in my quest for knowledge of the genre of "goth". KirlianBlue, I concur with your statement to "like what you like". It is said that knowledge is power. However, in totality of the polarity it is also said that ignorance is bliss. I think that it's healthy to expand one's acumen. But, that's just me.

There is nothing intriguing about Hipsters. Goth, at least what it was decades ago, was something I am very fond of. Goth, as it is now, is not something I am fond of.

"yet they are in common in that they deal with the idea of being different from the usual stream of conformity and are about self expression"

I wouldn't consider the hipsters I know unique snowflakes.

Goth Clubs in the early 1980's also played dark New Wave/Synthpop/New Romantic Music. If you like the Darker Sound I would also check out Gary Numan and Ultravox as band's which we're heavily Influential over Goth but you won't find many Goth's admit it.. This use to Humour me in late 90's going to their party's and actually seeing what was in their record collection, it was nothing which they admitted to in Public lol..

The 90's for some reason spawned a lot of kids who lied a lot in order to be "gothier than thou".

They'd lie about liking Christian Death or the SIsters, and more often than not it was obvious. So I'd get my enjoyment out of asking them which albums they liked by the bands, and they'd usually squirm a bit before saying, "all of them". But the lil gothier than thou types were only part of what made the 90's goth scene amusing. The christian right loons who'd go around preaching to goths about how they'd go to hell, they were my main source of entertainment.

I was commenting on the cultures in general. People are people, so of course,it varies. I'm not glorifying either one, since both have good attributes and negative as well (like all things). We could go further back in history and debate on what "true" groups are still around today. My point is that within the last two decades there has been some interesting evolution in the trends of society. Plus, in their beginnings, both were considered new and different. I'm not stating that all hipsters and goths are unique. I'm simply stating that they have some things in common, and that it would be kind of weird/ exciting to see what the two would make if combined, to (possibly) make a unique trend. And I am not referring to "scene" kids.

I don't think Goths called themselves hipsters in the 80s, I think it was "bohemian." As some punk and early proto punk bands would say they were.

But when it comes to hipster goths, I think you're talking about Nu-Goth. Just listen to newer bands like Washed Out, oOoOO, Austra, Salem, Chelsea Wolfe, †‡†/Ritualz and the occasional Cocteau Twins as your favorite old band.
