Type O Negative was a heavy metal band from Brooklyn, New York City. Although commonly viewed as a gothic metal band, Type O has also incorporated elements of doom metal and thrash metal. Their dramatic lyrical emphasis on themes of romance, depression, and death resulted in the nickname "The Drab Four" (in homage to The Beatles' "Fab Four" moniker). The band went Platinum with 1993's Bloody Kisses, and Gold with 1996's October Rust, and gained an enormous following with seven studio albums, two best-of compilations, and concert DVDs.
One of my all time favorite metal bands, I could listen to October Rust all day and not get tired of it. I admit, I'm not as much of a fan of their thrashier stuff, but songs like Love You To Death, World Coming Down, and Day Tripper are fantastic.
I am a fan for sure, although I had known about them before Peter Steele died I never cared to give them a listen, but when I heard of his passing, it was then I decided to tune in. Wish I could have said I'd been a fan of his a long time ago, but I can't. Love You to Death was my absolute favourite song by them too. R.I.P Peter Steele.
I was a huge TON fan and went to a lot of their shows. I was grief stricken about Peter's death and now, I just can't listen to their music. It's just too depressing now.
If you like their music, can I recommend a new metal band from South America called Ravenland? They have a male and female singer, and the male's voice is very similat to Peter's and Fernando from Moonspell.
What a great band. Been a favorite of mine for a long time. I still giggle every time I listen to "I Like Goils." It would have been a great pleasure to have seen them live.
I've been trying to get my hands on "Symphony For The Devil" but due to never having any money, this has proven to be quite difficult. Til' then.. there's always YouTube...
My second favorite band ever. Peter Steele was a musical genius. His songwriting skills were the best out there, nobody could touch him, except for King Diamond. Anyways, of ALL the live metal bands I had ever scene (and i saw a lot) including black and death metal bands, Type O had the HEAVIEST guitar tone my ears have ever heard. I mean, it literally went through my body. Fucking awesome! They were even heavier than Nile, Sabbath, Suffocation. Fucking perfection. RIP Peter Steele.
I will always maintain that Carnivore was the better band. "Retaliation" is almost retarded in how good it is, and the first record has "Male Supremacy"... Actually that record is basically like the best record that Venom never recorded haha
I second Woods of Ypres, their vocalist sounds very similar, although the songs I have from them are a bit more upbeat than Type O Neg.
This topic has inflenced me to go get all of their albums asap. They still have a big influence on me (Type O I mean)
My boyfriend has introduced me to them years ago when we first met and since then I'm still listening to them. I can't really say which would be my favourite album or song though, there's a good balance of songs I love from each album
I consider myself a lifelong fan and is in my upper tier of favorite bands. Seen them live twice, and both shows were absolutely greatest live performances I ever saw. Peter Steele death is one death that truly rocked my state of being as well as my sanity.
Peter Steele had the great good fortune of being one of the few musical artists who never really made a creative misstep in his career. Everything he touched was gold, from the two Carnivore albums (still some of my favorite thrash metal of all time) to the classic Type O Negative releases.
And there was nobody in the music business who sounded quite like him, either. The fellow from Woods of Ypres was similar, and I've heard comparisons made to Danzig(!), but really, there was nobody who had his amazing baritone croon. More, his bass playing was always a stand-out on any Type O Negative record, particularly on World Coming Down, where it formed the backbone of the record's heaviness.
His loss is felt throughout the metal community.

I can have October Rust and Bloody kisses on repeat. First track to last. I just got into their debut album, loving it. Bizarre changes from time to time.
I saw Type O Negative back in 2003 (I believe) when Lacuna Coil opened for them. I went with my best friend because (at the time Type O was his favorite band and Lacuna Coil was mine so it was a win/win). Despite the technical issues they had at that show (Peter couldn't hear his earpiece or something) I really did enjoy them and picked up OCTOBER RUST and definitely became a fan. I was very disheartened when I learned of Peter's death. I still consider myself fortunate that I got to see them though. I was surprised that they didn't have a band profile here.
Tool, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Katatonia, The Panic Division, Deftones, Lunatica, Breaking Benjamin, Type O Negative, Evanescence, Flaw, Broken Iris, Red, The Birthday Massacre, A Perfect Circle, Dead Letter Circus, Novus Dae, Metallica, etc.
Ive been trying to figure out for a while now what sort of guitar petal they use to make the sound their guitars have.Peter steele is a true master piece and if I knew where he was burried I might perform necromancy to bring him back lol.
