fUCK'N great dude. SLEEP !!! Hmmm. I might have to find a way to send /upload some early HIGH on FIRE boot legs. ( @ a bar with maybe 100-150 people @ the show. ) way before they cought on. great recordings from the sound board. And to the poster above Zerothepenguin. MadameHurt. There is a The Sword/Witchcraft live album @ KICKASS torrents if you "download" ..that I have been blasting for the last week..
Grunge is not a genre, but a umbrella term for bands that came from Seattle during the late 80s/early 90s.
Alice in chains sound pretty metal on some songs, but I also wouldn't call them pure metal. Their last album (meaning the self-titled or Tripod, not that boring album with that afro guy) has some sludge influences as well.

I'd consider that a very vague distinction to make.
There was also a strong presence of genre lines involved with the music, even if they regularly stepped over it.
There was a VERY distinctive sound characterizing the entire group.
That's like saying Death Metal was once primarily Florida's particularly gutteral flavour of thrash metal.
If you'd listen to (not saying you didn't btw) the big 'grunge' bands you'd see all of them have a distinctly different sound, history of said sound etc. Off of those bands are very different from each other. Campare a song like Negative Creep from Nirvana to Pearl Jam's Once. Though most narrowminded metalheads loathe Nirvana...the band used to be known for their raw and uncompromising sound.
I think the distinct characterizing of the group you are talking about is just the huge mediahype.
Weedeater
Bongzilla
Goatsnake
Sleep
OM
Yob
Wino
Melvins

I'm not indicating that these bands are indeed "stoner metal"; however, I am going to say that these bands will definitely hit the spot for whatever it is that you are looking for.
Ordo Ab Chao = Order Out of Chaos - this is our world now.
I'll probably check it out regardless, I got one of their cds at a thrift store dirt cheap. I haven't listened to much drone, I rarely have the patience for it, unless Noise Gate counts.
Sunn O))) is great but you can't treat it as just music. You need to be in the right mindset to absorb it all. I didn't get it for years but eventually it clicked.

Uh, not really. I found them a bit boring, but it has been ages since I listened to them... Just sold a Corrosion of Conformity cd on ebay for $30. Gotta loce thrift stores for making money.
So I recently ordered a CD grab bag from Relapse records, 30 CDs for $30, and "Star Condemn'd" by Earth was included in the bunch, was wondering what you guys think of that album? I'm sure I'll eventually get around to listening to it for myself, but seeing as I just got 30 CDs and I don't know Earth at all, this will be saved for last unless it grabs my attention.
Says it was recorded in '99, maybe it's an early demo or something. This is it:http://www.discogs.com/Earth-Star-Condemnd/release/2405354
Also, I got Lycanthropic Fellatio by Bitchslicer, and while looking it up on last.fm, happened to notice Zero was the last person to comment on that wall. I'm assuming that's a good CD and I should put it in my car right away so it will actually be played? :P
