All I really care for is Emperor and Satyricon ... I went through HUUUGE phase of listening to every corpse painted angry Norweigen band ... but I find it all a bit crappy these days.
One thing I don't get is why some bands insist of recording it in the old skool 'badly recorded' style, so it sounds like it was recorded on a banana ... you ever listened to a BM demo? I can't make a single fucking thing out
There are lot's of good BM demo's around and the lo-fi recording style just fits with alot of black metal and funeral doom. I wouldn't want to hear Armagedda's 'Ond Spiritism' with a production like Dimmu Borgir or something like thay.
By the way, both Satyricon's and Emperors first albums have a lo-fi production, although I think it sounds better on Dark Medieval Times than on In the Nightside Eclipse.
Travis, Ildjarn can be pretty inaudible too! Could never get into them, and the ambient stuff is just too boring.
You like Night is the New Day? Katatonia is probably my favorite band, but I still don't own a sigle album, even though I bought plenty of cds lately.
Ildjarn said more funny stuff, but he's still a moron.
Speaking of black people, I was waiting for the train yesterday and in a other train some black guy was looking at the girl I was with (we were standing outside) but when I turn around and then looked back I couldn't see him anymore and was like: "The fuck...he's gone! Oh wait, he's not" View was a bit distorted because of the reflection from the window and he was so dark I seriousln'y couldn't see him anymore.
just found it on my itunes ... the song 'Mayhem' must be 'I just left the mic on' and Carnage and Ghoul arent very good ... in fact Ghoul sounds better in the 'unmixed' version
That link sounds MUCH better than my version... hmmm
Been listening to the new Revenge lately. Pretty similar to their other work but they've been experimenting a bit more with slower tempos. Definitely my AOTY of the year so far or at least until the new Wrathprayer comes out.
I dunno how big Mary Shelley have gotten, but I like them.
They're another Washington BM band.
Sound nothing like WITTR, though.
I'm on the same page with that shitty quality bullshit.
I've always said that Black Metal was Norway's answer to punk, and it has the same retarded mentality about what makes a band TRVE or not.
No one with their head outside their rectum gives a flying shit. The "art" of black metal is a dead horse being slapped against a creative brick wall.
I'd say sometimes the quality adds some charm. Not saying it should all sound bedroom & cardboard box, but some of the savage stuff just wouldn't be as good when all polished.
I'm not saying everything should be overproduced, there's a happy medium, of course. I'd be more akin to compare it to a woman with massive fake tits, though.
To deliberately make something a lower quality is like deliberately buying distressed jeans.
It's self-defeating, and makes you look like a tool. Also, you have shitty jeans.
When it's a matter of not being able to afford it, I get it.
I think Burzum's done a good job in regard to quality.
Yeah, the recent albums aren't overpolished shiny gems, modern technology is being utilized. I can hear more than just buzzing tremolo.
I can't tell with Mayhem anyway, because I just think they're shit across the board. But I'm biased, I think they're complete idiots.
Ah the obligatory complaints over production. Many bands deliberately use raw production, it has nothing to do "lesser quality" and more to do with conveying a certain sound and artistic vision. Production should simply fit the artists vision and sure some artists can't afford better production, while some can.. but just because you can doesn't mean you should, especially as far as black metal is concerned. For example, I don't want Transylvanian Hunger to sound like Enthrone Darkness Triumphant... that would be terrible.
"Many bands deliberately use raw production, it has nothing to do "lesser quality" and more to do with conveying a certain sound and artistic vision"
That's fine and dandy, but unfortunately, the Black Metal Renaissance is over. At this point, it's no longer "artistically tasteful."
It's just "imitation," and coupled with sounding like shit, it's.... shitty.
Transylvanian Hunger was lo-fi because Darkthrone didn't have anything better to use.
