Unfortunately I was unaware this had occurred. Not to sound insensitive but I was just starting to plan for a computer build that my boyfriend was going to do for me and now that is either delayed or will be more expensive due to the floods. Now the prices for many parts are off the charts, especially hard drives. Every company WD, seagate, Hitachi, samsung and so forth on newegg and best buy has their prices much higher than they were before. Anything over a T of space is at least $150, most are averaging around 200 for 1T.
So I did a little searching online to see if the prices might come down once the companies in Thailand are started back up. I didn't find much other than speculation that the prices could be back to normal next month all the way up to half a year. I am not aware of how bad the floods were and their effect on the companies.
I don't watch the news much unless I am at work and they consistently have on FOX or CNN. But I never noticed any coverage of the flood. I understand since the floods many places shut down, but this severe of an up-charge? WD started production back up in early December, so hopefully this means an increase in prod and the market stabilizing in a few months.
I just don't want to sink too much money into my new computer just to have the prices drop after it is built. I write this message on my frankensteined 10 year old laptop which is no longer portable that crashed this summer and needed some minor repairs to get it functioning temporarily, I really want a new/better computer.
rr It can also be argued that DNA is nothing more than a program designed to preserve itself. rr
Honestly, I sort of have to agree with Termina's Moon above. Did not ONE of the major HDD companies think it may be a BAD IDEA to have the bulk of the supply chain in one spot?
Regardless, the more tech-savvy can find their own sources. Best example, there's an absolutely awesome spot locally that basically acts like a Goodwill for computer parts (FREE GEEK). Sure, the stock is dated and questionable, but in a pinch, it works.
Besides, if you don't already have 1TB somewhere, you'll just have to wait, as I hear that the "shortage" will be taken care of before the end of Q1 of this year.
