Im having problems with my PC, after changing my RAM to 8GB XMS3 i cant get any Linux based OS ive tried to run properly, the desktop becomes unresponsive almost constantly.
Ive tested the memory and its good, Windows 7 loves it but all the Ubuntu/Mint OS's ive tried hate it lol
wow! you just found a purpose for life! what are you gonna do next? EPIC FAIL!!!
Michio Kaku is f*cking awesome!
*btw, though I challenge your beliefs, I mean not to offend, but rather to stimulate thought.

Thoughts are harmonious like the rhythm of wind chimes,
Peel back the rind and examine the fruit,
Rotten to the core buried in their best suits."
my guess is that linux doesn't like the firmware your new memory is using. being freeware, these things sometimes happen. an earlier version may be better developed for the new device

Not sure if you're still looking for an answer to this, but...
Try using the 64-bit edition of Mint, ideally version 10 which I know doesn't have a problem with XMS3.
If it's not a single 8GB RAM module, try removing some of the memory and installing again. If it installs and works, you might then be able to add the extra and bring it back to 8GB.
Check the BIOS - you may be able to manually adjust the speed, timing etc of the RAM - match the settings as precisely as you can.
Are you 100% certain of the Live disk you're trying to install from? Where did it come from? Check for scratches and use the Mint/Ubuntu startup tool to check the installation media. Did you change anything other than the RAM? Try a hard reset by removing the CMOS battery on the motherboard with the power cable removed.
I wouldn't give up unless you're utterly fed up. Mint's a brilliant distro and worth using.
if you are running a 32 bit OS you need a PAE kernel to use more then 2 gigs of ram. second of all it could be the type or brand of ram you are using linux is great but it does have some issues you may have to manually fix yourself (i know from experence) another thing is fuck the LIVE CD make a usb boot drive and run from that its much faster and nicer, and you can create a casper-rw file to save in up to 4 gigs of space. also i love Mint thats what im using with Ultimate edition 3.0.1
ive gone as far as making a usb booting hard drive with a full install of UE 3.0.1 on it and so far ive had only the same minor issues that my pc has (devede failing if i dont let it make a menu and such) im working on a fix for the UE community since no one has one yet (UE 3.0.1 did just come out a few weeks ago)
No significant overhead, but because 64 bit no longer has the problems it used to, and some people need certain features/significant speed improvement in certain apps 64 bit provides, why would you not provide a 32-bit PAE and a 64-bit flavor?
