ADVICE RULES & FAQS - YOU WILL ALL READ THIS - UPDATED AUG 2011
May 25, 2009, 05:21pm
|
Welcome to the new, simplified, improved Advice Rules Section. We still have our FAQ's with help lines, advice on alternative sexualities & sexual orientation, sexual abuse and advice on contraception, help on therapists and other mental health professionals, depression, cutting & self harm, alcoholism and alcoholic parents, anger control, and quitting smoking. However, these are now off site to keep things cleaner and easier to follow. We also have at the bottom of this A brief word on signatures. But first and foremost, before posting anything, please take a moment to read over the rules and should you have any question please feel free to inbox a advice forum moderator

Advice Forum Rules & Housekeeping

• Mods/Admin staff - We are not required to actually tell you why we have taken an action. We don't have to specify why something was locked or deleted.

• Only post here if you're looking for advice or giving advice. All other posts will be moved or deleted. Repeat offenders may be banned. Making a rant thread about how stupid cutters are, or how girls are dumb for sleeping with boys, is NOT advice, and will be deleted.

This is NOT a rant forum. If you just need to 'get it out' but aren't actually asking for help, your post will be locked or deleted. If there is no clear question in your post, you can kiss it goodbye.

Treat all posters with respect. There will be NO flaming, NO insulting, NO making fun of anybody. Again, failure to comply with this rule may get you banned. This goes for ALL types of posts. I don't care if you think a post is fake, it could very well be serious, and you don't need to be an ass about it.

• When asking for advice, make sure to be as clear as possible. Posts like 'Should I dump my bf/gf???' are useless, and will be deleted. Clarify what your exact situation is. Proper spelling and grammar helps a lot as well!

• When giving advice, provide ARGUMENTS or EVIDENCE to explain your reasoning. Writing 'Yeah, I'd dump him/her' is nice, but please explain why you gave this particular advice. It may help others.

• No matter how stupid you think a post is, do NOT tell people to kill themselves! Doing so will just give me more work because I have to delete your post. When I'm in a bad mood, I'll just ban you for that as well.

Questions about your profile, cult or other site-related technical issues belong in the VF Site forum. Please check if your question has already been answered before you post there. Posts appropriate for the VF Site forum made in this forum will be moved or locked and sunk.

Do not ask for advice on illegal issues! For example, don't ask how to get cigarettes when you're underage. Likewise, do not ask for advice on how to lie to your parents. We will not help you get a tattoo or piercing without them. We will not help you hide you scars from cutting.

DO NOT GIVE LEGAL ADVICE. Whilst it's all well and good telling people in certain cases to tell the police/parents. None of you should be in the habit of telling other users such and such an activity is theft/criminal damage/conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. And, just as a warning, it actually a criminal offence in some jurisdictions which carries a custodial sentence so save yourself the hastle and get out of that habit right now. If you offer dodgy legal advice, i'll delete your post on sight.

We are not medical doctors. If you or a friend are suffering from some ailment, or you think you might be pregnant, don't bother posting. We cannot and will not help you. GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR. Alternately, take your health concern to the VF Food & Health forum.

No polls! If you're going to act according to the poll results, you may as well just roll dice. I delete polls without even opening the thread, so don't bother.

• The drama emote "drama" and other emotes are NOT a valid response to a question. I will delete your post, if that is all you reply to a thread with.

• When titling your thread, make it relevant to your post. "HELP!", "I'm sad" or "What should I do?" are used a million times. If you want people to pay attention make yours stand out, while still being relevant!

Use coherent English! Yes we're here to help, but please don't waste our time (time we could be using to try and think of help for you) with spastic typing. Use paragraphs! People do not like to read huge blocks of text, if you're on the computer, then you've been to English class and should already know what a paragraph is.

Do not hijack threads. In real life, if someone was talking about their mom beating them, and you interjected about how you can't get laid, you'd likely get slapped. If you do that here, I'll just delete your posts, and have you banned for repeat offences.

We will not do your homework. Don't ask us to help solve your maths problems, or analyse your English for you. Especially when you've been lazy enough to leave it all for the night before. Use your brain, open a book, get help from friends doing the same subject, talk to your tutor. But don't ask us.

Use line breaks or something to signify a clear difference between a post and your signature.

No Holiday or gift-oriented threads. We can't tell you what to buy for a person we don't know.

• We WILL NOT give you advice on any types of revenge or pranks. Grow up.

• Do not post mindless posts like "hmm..," "I agree with so-and-so," "?," etc. These are pointless and will be deleted.

Do not countermand medical advice or prescriptions dispensed by a licensed health care practitioner. The mods don't interfere too much with how the forum rolls, but we will not abide by users recommending that a person NOT take medicine prescribed by a doctor. Nobody here is a medical doctor (last we heard; correct us if we're wrong), so let's leave the medical decisions to the individual seeking advice and his or her doctor. It's okay to say that they don't work for YOU, but it's NOT okay to countermand a doctor's prescription.

If you believe someone is breaking these rules, send sunset-skies (Megs), Cephalopod, Mirai no Kibou (Chris), Konstantine (Chelsea), Tore (Tore), KarenWalker (Ali), Lyss, or offcloudnine (Kelly) an inbox message.

Some words on signatures;

It has been noted that many "signatures" are plain-text and often have content which may be misunderstood as post content. To prevent such confusion, we suggest that you edit your signature to make it distinct from post content. Integrating emotes, using colored text or a non-default font face or size will keep your signature distinct from your post content. Simpler still, a line of dashes or underscores will do the job, as will a
horizontal rule line. Here's an example of a sig edit -

...which looks like this:

this is my sigbanana

More HTML goodness can be found in the VF Site forum.

While we're on the topic of signatures, the issue of signature images bears mention. Images wider than 600 pixels or longer than 300 pixels are considered too large for forum use. We strongly suggest resizing the image using a graphics editor. Images exceeding those dimensions may be edited or deleted at the discretion of the mods.

The management of VampireFreaks.com makes no endorsement of any advice posted here (implicit or explicit) and assumes no responsibility for any of it - the content of the posts are the explicit responsibility of the posters, and the option to heed or act upon any of the advice posted here is entirely upon those who seek advice.

This is a moderated forum, but the mods are not specifically responsible for determining the suitability of responses to those seeking advice. It is the responsibility of those who seek advice to exercise their own judgement and apply a critical eye to the responses to their questions.

Thank you.
