Ego Likeness was created in 1999 by artist Steven Archer, a DC native, and writer Donna Lynch in Baltimore, Maryland. Taking their name from Frank Herberts classic science fiction novel 'Dune', the band began as an experimental/ dark trip hop project. A demo called Songs From a Dead City, recorded on a four track, was released in 1999.
By 2000, Archer and Lynch were moving the project in a darker electronic/ dance direction, resulting in a self-released full length album entitled Dragonfly.
After a short hiatus from recording and a lengthy period of trial, error, and revision, and many regional live performances, Ego Likeness signed with Dancing Ferret Discs for the release of 2004s Water to the Dead. This album featured the bands electronic roots while exploring a bit of a heavier rock sound.
Their first album Dragonfly was re-released on Dancing Ferret Discs in 2005, and 2006 saw the release of their third full-length CD 'The Order of the Reptile' (DFD), an album that brought together several of EL's past styles, including darkwave, trip-hop, and rock.
Between 2007 and 2009, the band released a single, The Lowest Place on Earth and three of the four Compass EPs South, West, and North.
Their fourth full-length, Breedless, was released in the spring of 2010 on Metropolis Records. The final Compass EP East is scheduled for release before the end of the year.
EL has toured the continental US, Germany, Luxembourg, Poland and the UK, as well as performing at several festivals on the east and west coast, including Convergence 11 (San Diego CA), Draculas Ball (Philadelphia PA), Black Sun Festival (New Haven CT), Freaks United (DC), Eccentrik Festival I (Raleigh NC), Dragon Con (Atlanta GA), Wicked Faire (Whippany NJ) and more.
In addition to touring with The Cruxshadows, Ayria, Angelspit, Combichrist, Bella Morte, and Voltaire, EL have had the honor to share the stage with Peter Murphy, Nizter Ebb, The Damned, Chris Connelly, Collide, Razed in Black, Das Ich, Rasputina, The Start, Iris, Decoded Feedback, The Azoic, In Strict Confidence, Stromkern, New Model Army, Zombie Girl, And One, Seabound, Attrition, Assemblage 23, and many others.
They have appeared on numerous compilation CDs, including several Asleep by Dawn and Hot Topic releases and 'Where's Neil When You Need Him?' (a tribute to the work of author Neil Gaiman, DFD 2006); released remixes for The Cruxshadows (Cassandra-Fortress in Flames), The Last Dance (Terribly When- Reflections of Rage), Thou Shalt Not (Inside of You, In Spite of You- The Projectionist), Black Tape for a Blue Girl (Tarnished- Scarecrow), and Angelspit (Vena Cava- Krankhaus/ Girl Poison- Red Kingdom Black Kingdom), and more; and appeared on Voltaire's album 'Then and Again' and Angelspits Hideous and Perfect. EL has been featured in publications such as Zillo, Gothic Beauty, Outburn, ABD, Sideline, Pollstar, and Sonic Seducer, to name a few.
