Body Image: Enough Just Never Seems to Be Enough
What is beauty? A rich soul? Talent? Kindness? Selflessness? Intelligence?
According to the media, beauty is only something on the surface. Why is that? Because nothing on television is real. What you see are actors being fake- portraying not themselves but fictional characters. Television is not real; however, it desperately wants you to believe it is.
To an extent, we all can agree that beauty is something that can be seen. There is nothing wrong with perceiving beauty through sight, but what is superficial beauty? Thick, healthy hair.. a rosy complexion.. a captivating smile.. shining eyes. Beautiful things, yes.. but this is not enough.. a woman must push herself farther to even make the cut for what is beautiful. Her body must not be too fat.. she can be as thin as possible, however, she should maintain some weight, lest she be flat chested. Let us go even farther in that direction and say that natural God-given breasts are not good enough, so a woman must surgically insert blobs of silicon into her bosom. If she is of dark skin, she must lighten her skin. If her eyes are dark, she should use colored contacts; if her hair is dark, it should either be highlighted or completely bleached. If she is of a heritage which gives her a larger-than-'normal' nose, she must have that fixed as well; thin lips should be injected to become plumper.
If we're all different, why do we all have to adhere to the same bogus standard? What are we teaching our children? They too will get these genetic signatures- we're telling them if they do not conform and change their natural appearance, they are not good enough. They are not acceptable. They are not human beings.
And, if a woman were to do everything possible to make herself "beautiful", it would still not be enough. This is why we have photoshop. The beauty of photos- they can be edited..they are not real. In a sense, women are nothing more than photos..one dimensional, easily destroyed, only looked upon.. and when we fade, we are to be put away in a dusty box in the attic.
