Wrestling Terms
The following are some
basic terms used and said in the wrestling industry; it is liste in alphabetical order. You may come to hear and read some of these terms quite often in news articles that we post, or even in comments in our threads. Don't know what a word means? Check below and get educated in wrestling lingo.
Angle - The storyline created by the writing team that is carried out on TV by the wrestlers
Babyface - Also known as the 'Face' The good guy, or fan favorite, in a feud
Blading - When a wrestler deliberately cuts himself with a razor blade, usually hidden in the tape around his wrist, so he'll bleed during a match
Booker - The person who writes the storylines and angles, and determines their outcome
Bump - When one wrestler performs a move on another, and the recipient appears to have been injured by it
Dark Match - A match that is seen by the live crowd at a TV taping, but doesn't air on the actual show
Feud - The build-up of matches between 2 wrestlers/teams that takes place over a period of time
Gimmick - The character a wrestler portrays and the mannerisms and traits he/she gives that character
Heat - Negative response from the fans, often involving booing or chants
Heel - The bad guy. The person that is generally disliked and booed by the fans
House Show - A live event that isn't taped to air on television
Job - To lose the match; to be pinned by the opponent
Jobber - An undercard wrestler who loses most of his matches
Juice - To blade, or cut oneself to cause bleeding
Juicing - Using steroids
Kayfabe - A term used to describe a wrestler when he's in character. To break kayfabe is to step out of character and let the fans see the real side
Mark - A person who believes that wrestling and all the angles and storylines are real
Over - When a wrestler gets the desired response from the crowd
Pop - When the crowd cheers for a wrestler
Potato - To deliberately stiff someone or use more force than is necessary
Push - When the bookers put a wrestler in a high-profile angle
Screwjob - When cheating is involved in a match
Sell - When a wrestler acts as if a move has legitimately injured him
Shoot - When something happens or is said that wasn't planned as part of the angle
Spot - A series of maneuvers in a match
Squash - When a wrestler defeats another wrestler in a quick match with very little if any offense by the jobber
Stiff - When maneuvers are executed with more force than is necessary
Storyline - Angles that are put together to tell a story between two wrestlers/teams
Tweener - A wrestler that is usually more heelish in actions, but is so cool the fans like him anyway
Work - This describes 99% of wrestling matches and angles. The storyline that is planned out and executed effectively
