This cult is based of the Vampire Academy books by Richelle Mead. Basically there are two types of vampires. Moroi and Strigoi. Strigoi are your stereotypical vampires. They are the living dead, have no soul, can't be out in sunlight, kill their victims, etc. Moroi are pretty much the opposite of Strigoi. Moroi can go out in the sunlight, though it weakens them, are very much alive, and some are deeply religious. Each moroi have an affinity for an element, which they call their magic. The elements they can have control over are Fire, Water, Air, Earth, or Spirit. Each Moroi can only specialize in one element. Spirit users are the most uncommon. There is rarely ever a spirit user. Spirit users have limited control over all elements along with there own abilities, such as entering peoples dreams, healing wounds and some can even bring people back for the dead within the first few minutes of their death. Compulsion, being able to control the will of others, is a skill that all Moroi possess, but spirit users are the most skilled. Though compulsion is used it is frowned upon so you must try not to get caught using it, and never use it in public unless you can definately avoid notice. Strigoi also have great compulsion skills, so strong they rival those of the Moroi, but the Strigoi can not possess magic over elements because the magic is "alive" and Strigoi are , for the most part, dead.
Strigoi's main mission in life is to gain money, power, and to kill Moroi, especially one of the 12 royal families. Dhampirs, Half Moroi and half human, job is to protect Moroi from Strigoi. Dhampirs go to St. Vladmir Academy to learn physical combat along with there regular class studies. Once the Dhampir graduate they become guardians. Guardians either assigned to a certain Moroi that they must protect, work at the school as a teacher, or work at the royal court. They get a limited amount of time off, and usually stay with one assignment until retirement.
The royal court is basically like the vampires white house. There is a prince or princess in each royal family, the oldest alive in their line, and then there is one queen or king. Each king or queen is chosen by the former royal leader. The only catch is that they king or queen has to pick someone from a different royal family to be leader so the title can not stay in their family for more than one generation at a time.
You are allowed to be a human, feeder (human that the moroi feed off of), or a human that help Strigoi break into places by breaking the wards. Wards are forged of all the elements, except spirit. The only way to break a ward is to stab a silver stake that is enforced with the same elements as the wards. Strigoi can't touch silver stakes or anything enforced with the elements so they trade humans the promise of immortality for their help, although the strigoi rarely turn humans.
There are two ways for Moroi to become Strigoi. They can either kill the person they are feeding off of, on purpose, by draining them. Then there is the way that Moroi, Dhampir, and humans get changed, or awakened as strigoi say, which is by being drained completely by a strigoi and fed their blood.
Lastly are the Alchemists. Alchemists are a tight-knit group of humans who cover up any signs of Strigio, Moroi and Dhampir life. They are skilled, using potions a gadgets to be rid of any such evidence, such as destroying a body of a Strigoi once a Dhampir has killed it and left the scene. Alchemists are, dur to the story's, very much afrid of any contact with even a Dhampir. They stay clear of contact unless it is utterly important, and maintain complete knowledge and the going-ons of the Moroi world.
