Rancid was formed in Berkeley, California in 1991. Formed by Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman who were formor members of the band Operation IVY.

Matt and Tim then added Brett Reed to the band on drums. After searching for a 2nd guitarist Matt had found Lars Frederiksen in 1993 who is on guitar/vocals.

Rancid is a musical blend of punk, reggae, ska, along with tids and bits from funk, and dub. They released their 1st album in 1993 on Epitaph Records.

The band toured almost constantly in the mid 90's. They became very popular in the 90's and were persued by many other record labels such as Maverik, but they stuck with Epitaph until 00' and they switched to Hellcat which is basically Epitaph's sister label I would say. Then on their last album 'Indestructible' released in 03' was released on Hellcat but distributed by Warner bros.

The bands members also find time to have their own side projects:br> Tim Armstong has had his other band The Transplants, but they have just recently broke up.
Lars Frederiksen has his band Lars Fredriksen And The Bastards [LFATB] which has been pretty successful and has toured quit a bit.

Rancid has been an influencial band ever since they started, they will live on in their music forever [I hope so lol]

In 06' Rancid is said to begin a worldwide tour which is rumored to be their last... And in early 07' they will relase an album.
