Studio Ghibli, widely considered as Japan's premiere animation studio, was founded in 1985 by two of animation's greatest creators: Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.
Its name comes from the word the Italians used for their Saharan scouting planes in World War II, which derived from the Libyan "sirocco", a hot wind blowing through the Sahara Desert.
Studio Ghibli was to blow a new wind into the Japanese animation industry and indeed it has!
