Katniss "Catnip" Everdeen
Katniss lives in District 12 with her mother, and little sister, Prim. Her father died, when she was just a little girl, in a coal-mining accident. That's what her Distict does; mine coal. Before his death, he taught her everything he knew. He taught her how to identify plants that are edible. He taught her how to trade with other townspeople. Most importantly, he taught her how to hunt. He taught her how to survive. How to be strong. So after his death, she took his place. Her mother emotionally abandoned them. She was always there...but not in the way they needed. She raised Prim alone. She kept her happy, healthy, and clean.




Peeta Mellark
Peeta is 16 years old when The Hunger Games take place. He is the baker's son, which makes him wealthier than most people in District 12, the coal mining district. He has strict parents and an undesirable childhood. Peeta has had a crush on Katniss close to his whole life. Peeta is bold, having announced that he was in love with Katniss to the whole nation; smart, figuring out strategies to use in the Games; and willing to go to extremes to keep Katniss alive. However, in the first book, Peeta told Katniss that he did not expect he would win.






Gale Hawthorne
Gale is 18 years old and works in the mines. Born and raised in the Seam of District 12, Gale is used to living on the verge of starvation. He appears in The Hunger Games as Katniss Everdeen's best friend, although their relationship seems to border on romantic. Looking almost exactly alike, Gale and Katniss could easily pass as siblings. And by their close friendship, you would have thought they were. Gale is an idealist, trying to believe the world can change for the better. Gale looks out for his three siblings, Rory, Vick, and Posy, and his mother, Hazelle, by himself. His father died in the same mine accident as Katniss's father did.




Haymitch Abernathy
He is 40 years old. Haymitch is drunk and surly the majority of the time. Harsh and usually not understanding, District 12's hero is crude and unfriendly. Haymitch Abernathy was the first Hunger Games victor from District 12, and works as a mentor to subsequent tributes from the district. He mentors Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark twenty-four years later, during the 74th Hunger Games, and again during the 75th Games. Haymitch was originally drawn the be the male tribute for the 75th Hunger Games, but Peeta volunteered to go in his place. During those Games, Haymitch still puts on the same hard personality, but is closer to Katniss and Peeta, although he tries to hide it.




Primrose / Prim Everdeen
She is 12 years old. She has a passion for healing. Prim shares a love for living things. She loves animals of all kinds, even the ugliest ones. Primrose was the original tribute for the 74th Hunger Games, but would not have lasted long in the competition. When her sister volunteers for her, however, Primrose is devastated, and makes her promise to return home. Primrose is the youngest of the Everdeen family, her sister being Katniss. Her father, Mr. Everdeen, died in a mine explosion four years before, leaving her mother, sister, and herself alone. The three of them live in the Seam with a goat and cat.
