Zombie Girl interview by Talek
|
March 30, 2007, 08:28pm
|
Through the fascination of the bizarre with the clash of flesh, blood and brains, Zombie Girl paves the way for the undead scene. Sexy, humorous and horrific, let her inside: listen.
> It has been nearly a year since the release of the successful EPCD “Back From The Dead”. Now on March 30th, Zombie Girl’s highly anticipated first ever album: “Blood, Brains & Rock'n Roll” is to be finally released with an astounding total of 25 tracks on the 2CD edition. Now Zombie Girl has been confirmed to take the stage at Convergence 13 and even share it with none other than Skinny Puppy.
Seb: Blood, Brains & Rock'n'Roll is the next step for us as a band and for me as a musician. We're quite happy with the result and proud to let the world explore the world of Zombie Girl in a fuller and more complete package than with an EP, which was served a taste of whats to come. Back From The Dead did really well, so that was a good inspiration to really do our best for the full length. Opening for Skinny Puppy at Convergence 13 is pretty sweet. Can't wait! Never seen them live either so it's going to one hell of a treat. We also just have confirmed a gig in Canada opening for Frontline Assembly which also is going to be quite the show I'm sure!!
Renee: Plus you'll see Zombie Girl at Summer Darkness Festival this year (http://www.summerdarkness.nl/) a show in Belgium and some others. You're first to know and announce the Summer Darkness Festival show
> This must be one of the happiest times in your lives to be able to share with one another such accomplishments.
Seb: Hahaha that's funny!! Now really, it is great to share this sort of thing, that said this also can put a releationship on a test, which we seem to have passed. I am happy we can do something together that is successful and this brings us lots of great times and good memories. To speak for myself I feel music is going well, really well, lot of things going on right now behind the scenes, soon I'll be able to get it out there to the masses. Zombie Girl to me is really a lot of fun working on and how can I complain having a sexy woman in studio singing, specially after a shower, and I can always have her do parts over and over again once I removed her clothes hahaha . Hmm, which reminds me to get hold of some female backup singers to help her out.....It's hard work you know.
Renee: Hahaha! Seb is insane. He means that I would need some hot guys to assist me with various things. These things shall not be mentioned here for fear of mass masturbation scenes from the people reading this interview. Then they'd fall off their chairs and get hurt.
> [Laughs] So now that the new album has reached completion, what does the future hold for both of you either as an individual, musician, artist or a producer?
Seb: I'm currently working on some new Seb tunes, which can be heard on my Myspace site [http://www.myspace.com/sebastianrkomorSite] It's techon'ish with EBM influences and even some breakbeats and abstract soundmanipulations, intended for dancefloor but also for dark lonesome days in a corner of your basement where everything is coming to get you. My aim is to release a full length with those tracks. Also going release a couple of those songs through a 12" label and on some compilations, with people like Thomas P. Heckman, X-Dream and the like.
Renee: Well I'll continue doing Zombie Girl shows and getting ideas for the next album and of course managing my dread falls business. (http://www.hairoglyphs.com) It's something I enjoy doing and my dreads are really nice. I have alot of girls in the scene who agree with me. Dreads by Zombie Girl You know you want to
> Is there a concept behind "Blood, Brains & Rock'n'Roll" or is it to be simply taken as it is entitled?
Seb: I wanted a title that really screamed in your face: THIS is Zombie Girl! It's bloody, gory, gooey, hot, sexy and lots of Rock'n'Roll forced into an electronic world of creepy crawlers, ghouls and living dead walking the earth. This album is a statement about our pleasures and pains seen through the eyes of the walking dead. A lot of our songs can also be interpreted into society as it is with all it's creeps and devious monsters. And let's not forget there are a lot of Zombies among us even though they're not dead, I know a lot of them, trust me: The Zombies are closer to you than you think!.
> With all the new material, has there been any thought towards what tracks could be potential singles?
Seb: Oh yes. I have spent some time thinking about potential club hits and singles, however releasing singles these days is most likely not something labels really want to "waste" money on, as few people really buys them these days. Maybe some form of online single or something, who knows.
> KMFDM remixed Creepy Crawler, Zombie Girl remixed You're No Good. Now the remix trade off continues with Mortiis for their upcoming remix album and Zombie Girl's 2CD edition. Is it pure irony that remixes end up on both sides or is it all part of the initial arrangement?
Seb: Those were the agreements. Which is fair trade. I asked KMFDM, Mortiis asked us. And I personally thinks is pretty awesome to remix trade with bands that have a bit different sound that the usual EBM/Future-Pop sound, make it all more interesting. I remixed Frontline Assembly recently as well, which was a highlight for me. I am proud to have had KMFDM and Mortiis remixing us, and vice verse. They did a good job.
Renee: I feel honoured really.
> Is there any difficulty to find inspiration lyrically with concern to the fixed zombie theme?
Seb: Not at all. Ideas are coming to me like mosquitoes on a summer evening! It's quite an interesting subject to write about and one can come up some neat stories or play with an already existing story such as Jesus Was a Zombie. Since we both are fans of horror/zombie/sci-fi movies it makes it all even better.
Renee: It's easy to envision new Zombie Girl ideas. I'm a very visual person and no stranger to Zombie themes or movies.
> Jesus might have been a zombie indeed. Of all people: James Cameron, director of Titanic & The Terminator; claims to have found "The Lost Tomb of Jesus". Do you have any thoughts on this headline/discovery?
Seb: If you look at the facts; Died > burried > came back to life. That is a classic Zombie story, no doubt about it. But back then that would be considered a miracle obviously, specially before the days of cinematic entertainement. I personally think Jesus [if he existed] was a wise man with healing powers and most likely wellspoken with a strong ability to persuade people to his ways. Nothing wrong with that. Today we have David Copperfield and Chris Angel aka Mindfreak. This is not intended to put down people who believe in God and his holy companions, just how I feel. If someone can show me facts that prooves Jesus is the son of God, ok, I'll accept, but until then I belive in what makes sense. Science also do have prooved with scientific facts that a lot of the major biblical events were just rare events by mother nature, such as volcano activities and other unusual events which are known these days, which back in the days of Jesus would be considered to be miracles. The Lost Tomb of Jesus is interesting and I will keep checking it out and see what it all is about. It is an interesting subject after all, tombs that is and what truths can be uncovered.
Renee: Jesus was a zombie came tome one night when we were brain storming Z.G. ideas. He died, came back.....hence zombie. Not meant to offend any Jesus whorshippers at all. Just in the name of fun. I think it would make for a interesting visual feat. I won't give out any clues here. Too many idea theives on the loose. I'd like to have James Cameron's budget and do a alternate documentary based on ancient zombies from Nazareth and have someone who looks like Jesus entombed and we'd open the tomb and he's stumble out saying he was Jesus and then cure the little 'crippled child' we'd have planted in the audience. Top that James Cameron!
> Icon of Coil has a remix on the EPCD's track "We Are The Ones". Sebastian, what is it like to dissociate yourself from one band and produce a separate remix for it as another?
Seb: I just listened to some good old IOC to get into the mood, then get a classic IOC groove going. And as I have done this before it wasnt a big challenge or anything, just thought it would be interesting to try to remix myself as my other self .
> Could you provide a current gear listing to give us some insight on what you are using to define Zombie Girl's sound?
Seb: Sure, but then I'll have to have you eliminated by an zombie army. I usually dont mind telling people but I have learned the hard way that people are more than happy to be my shadow and start reqiering the same gear I have to try and get the same sound I do, which in one way is flattering but on the other side: Hey, do your own fucking thing!. It's good to be nice but be too nice and people will suck you dry like leaches, and I dont mean the good way . You can however find a lot of info about my studio and work on my Xenomorph website, it is not 100% updated, but still something.
> Zombie Girl held a limited time offer to have fans voice heard on the new Limited Edition CD with only the most creative greetings being chosen. This is a very unique and intriguing idea. Who came up with it and what sort of entries did you receive?
Renee: It was my idea and it went very well. I think everyone who took part will have a smile on their face for days and they've become part of music history. I thought it would add something special and different to the whole production.
> Sebastian, has there been any progress on Moonitor?
Seb: Yes and no. I havent really had much time to work on Moonitor, on the other hand I have tons of songs and song ideas going, but very few are complete or something I am ready to release. Moonitor has a lot of soul to it, so I dont just throw tracks out there, I need to feel right about the content. Moonitor has been around for a long time, even before the days of IOC, but there's always been something going on stealing time from me I guess. I know one day I'll pack my shit and tell everyone to back off so I can focus on this or something like that .
> In recent news, four major pressing plants have refused to print Zombie Girl's album art which in turn may delay the release of the new album. "We won't take part of such a bloody product". One of these pressing plants has the same people who printed Unter Null CD's which features just about the same amount of blood as Zombie Girl's. What are your thoughts on this aesthetic censorship and how has the album been coming along since?
Seb: Completely nonsence!! It's the year 2007 for gods sake, seriously, we all see worse things on the news on a daily basis, some brains on a plate and blood staines isnt something worse than reality, so I find it rather timewasting. But on the other hand we did get some really good laughs on this one, we have to thank the 4 pressing plants to be so kind with the free promotion.
Renee: The printing has been done now by a printing company, not the four that refused. Who knows what was going on. There was nothing offensive in the booklet. :/ Personally I am confused. Maybe it was little old ladies printing that day?
> Countries vary a fair bit as to what is acceptable. Do you think that this situation would cease to exist if the pressing plants were located in America or Canada instead of Germany?
Seb: North America is kind of funny on that issue. In one way they are more easy going on blood, gore, sex and all that, but at the same time the F word and all these other censored phrases are cut out, and then you need the "warning, explicit content" sticker on it, which again is off. I would like to know who they are protecting? It's not like the consumer wont know what's hiding behind the bleeps and blackouts..I don't think Germany is worse or better when it comes to censorship, in most cases I am sure it is a matter of the workers personal moral and religious beliefs that comes in the way. Canada's cool that way, it's fuck and shit all the way!
Renee: Most definately. Zombie stuff comes from North America on a regular basis, you know.
> Are there plans for any zombie babies or is Hamilton filling that position for now?
Seb: I have no plans of having zombie babies or any kind of babies at this point. Simply because I don't have time at this point in my life and doing so really requires time and dedication which I would want to have available to bring a child into this world, which at this point I cant. Music is taking a lot of time in my life at this point, and I still have a lot of goals to reach, so it's full force forward!
Renee: Perhaps in the future. Right now Hamilton is our baby
> Could you give us some examples of your favorite musical artists lately?
Seb: Sure can. I listen to all sorts of music really, anything from Kloq, Rammstein, Bjork, Juno Reactor, Thomas P. Heckman, Depeche Mode, and to be honest I am really looking forward to the new VNV Nation album. I heard the clips and it sounds pretty promising, which is good as I am almost about to give up on the old faithful ebm scene.
> Thanks for taking the time to do this, are there any words that you'd like to leave our readers and your fans with?
Seb: Let's see..ok here's something: If you are a DJ, radio persona or have some form of a setup which publicly broadcast music physically or in cyberspace: If you want to spin/play any of my music, please do not just steal/grab/take/rip my music. I really dont appreciate that, specially since I let fans and so on hear my music before it is released as a token of appreciation. Simply write me a message with your request and in most cases I will allow the usage of my music, it's that simple. Dont have to steal and illegally claim you got something others dont, thats relly respectless, and we as musicians are after all supposed to respect you right? Funny thing about respect is: it has to work both ways. To end it off: I hope to see you all soon somewhere! This is just the beginning.......soon....very soon the living dead will come to a town near you...!!
Renee: If you ever catch on fire, try to avoid looking in a mirror, because I bet that will really throw you into a panic.
