Club dancers & DJ friends from Europe told me a few years back that I really needed to check out FabrikC. Being too busy, I made the mistake of waiting about another year before I finally checked out Thorsten Berger's work. I shouldn't have waited too long: FabrikC's music hits like a sledgehammer, it's so amazingly powerful. Clubs need this project to test their sound system and we need this style everywhere! Now FabrikC is on Vampire Freaks. Check out their music as you read this interview!
Hey Thorsten, glad to finally get to chat up about FabrikC! Is there a meaning behind the project name?
Some meaning that may be not a real meaning. It's just about a nice story behind this name. Not just some people say it's because the "FabrikA“ and "FabrikB“ didn't work nor is it because of some people think it's all automatic generated music based on the key of "C“ It's more like there was a thought to give the project a name with some meaning of the electronics, mechanics, machinery – so the FABRIK (German word for factory) was chosen. Finally the rest is just something about the unique name stuff.
Where in Germany does FabrikC originate?
Me myself I was born in the most industrial region of Germany: Oberhausen (the "Ruhrgebiet“ where the Maschinenfest takes place)… maybe this is a reason for this kind of music. Since then I've lived in Hannover for several years.
I read in your bio that everything originated from a 'need for music'. What made you decide to have FabrikC create music in a more noisy, stompy style?
There is a simple answer: Because i like the energy, the beat, the sweat of the machines and of course to be a little bit different than the stuff played on the radio all day. To make people dance and forget about the day, the stress, the problems. So me i am in a need for music. It's a kind of making myself heard – to shout directly into society. Make them listen to something different than the lies all around.
You compose all the music; how is the project presented on stage?
It's pretty simple on stage. Grab yourself a drummer (halfevil) and a supporting keyboarder (FRYZ) and play most of the stuff LIVE(!). Combine fun, action and interaction with the people. They need to be entertained, they want to be entertained and as long as I live my music on stage people can start living with me. The most important part is to bring the energy from stage to the crowds.
The tracks "100% Elektronik" and "Chinese Food" from the "Impulsgeber" album really had a strong impact in clubs. Did you know before hand that this would be a bigger album?
No, really, I just made the music with the same intention in every track/album. I am really happy that people really liked these tracks and it's hard to fulfill the expectations that may come for the new CD. But you can't compose a "hit"; people make it a club hit or something similar. You're lucky if you fit the mood, expectations and people's wishes.
FabrikC really seems to have hit a lot of the festivals in the circuit. Do you have any favorite festivals picked out from the many you've done?
I LOVED playing at WGT (Wave Gothic Treffen) and KINETIK! These were amazing festivals!
You also still DJ & produce a music night back in your home area, correct? Tell us how those nights are going (and whether or not the crowds are lucky enough to hear some new & unreleased FabrikC material!).
WHOUW! This would take maybe a whole book to tell what i am doing when working on all the music stuff At first I may say that I still love to DJ! It's some kind of being part of the music and the people and maybe a little bit a kind of a puppet master to make them people move. I got a day job, of course, there is not enough financial benefit to put more time and effort into music. But anyway the normal "day" is like this: Wake up, office (several hours), back home, short break, music, late night bedtime. What is all the night for with the music? There is one side project where i am composing all the synth lines and programming all the synth sounds. Also programming the drums, even if it doesn't sound like FabrikC. Anyway there is lot of work to be made within the music. Starting with collecting ideas, building sounds and soundscapes. Arranging. Mixing. Re-listening. Until i am satisfied. There is not always lot of time – as much as i wish i would have for the stuff. There was lots of time the day job took over the past years, so there was not that much time for the music. This is a little part of the reason why the new CD took a little bit longer. New stuff will be released on November! The new album : It will be available for pre-order on www.fabrikc.de and of course at your local dealer!
Is there any more information yet you can reveal about this upcoming new album?
Yes I can. As I told it will be released in November 11 this year! The name will be WIDERSTAND ( resistance, résistance, Resistência, αντίσταση, resistencia, сопротивление, resistenza, 抵抗, 電阻) the tracklist will be: Maschinenbefehl[INTRO], zu laut, tempus fugit, coup bas, Widerstand [album Version], Aggrolectric, Cherubim, ff, Pandoras Box, Maschinengewalt, killstate 2011, fastkill, Alarm, Kubikelfe, x4 [Phosgore Remix], Widerstand [Mordacious Remix]
And hopefully will North America get to see FabrikC tear up the stage again soon?
I hope so. My booking agency (NEUWERK MUSIC) is doing a good job in booking all over the world and i was already in contact with JF from KINETIK but it seems to be all booked so there will be no FabrikC show at least in Canada yet. But who knows …. maybe there will be any promoter having fun booking a FabrikC show or a DJ Set
