The Challis Effect (named after a small town in central Idaho) is the acoustic solo project of Boise, Idaho native Matthew “Axl” Brammer (born Matthew Peck). After having spent a decade playing in extreme metal bands, the multi-instrumentalist Brammer decided in December 2011 to turn to a new expression musically, returning to his musical roots…having grown up around classical music, soft/pop rock, and post grunge. Drawing from influences (old and new) such as Tantric, the Goo Goo Dolls, Default, the Black Crowes, and Hootie and the Blowfish, Brammer spent the spring and summer of 2012 writing and recording acoustic demos, in some cases posting them online (the Haunted and Alone and Wishful Thinking and Broken Dreams EPs were collections of rough demos unofficially released for free, along with several single songs later that year). A profoundly positive reaction from fans and musicians alike led to the writing/rewriting process for the debut album, Your Heart Was Built On A Graveyard Of Lies, which was recorded in the fall of 2012 in Axl’s home studio in Laramie, Wyoming. Though underfunded and independently released, the album’s singles have continued to spark interest in the indie community, garnering positive reviews from independent reviewers and putting The Challis Effect at the top of the local Reverbnation.com charts. The Challis Effect has also had success on Jango internet radio.
The debut album was digitally released on January 16th, 2013 (Brammer’s 28th birthday), with a separate physical release set for later this year. The digital release contains a bonus track, “Hands On The Wheel”, which was written and recorded after the actual album process had already been completed. The physical release will contain four bonus tracks: two piano demos and two acoustic cover songs….Seven Mary Three’s hit “Cumbersome” and 40 Below Summer’s “Breathless”.
In March 2013, The Challis Effect announced the completion of a new album, a mostly-acoustic release entitled All The Secrets You Thought You Kept. While a specific release date has not been determined, Brammer confirmed it would be "very soon", and detailed that this release would be available as a "Pay What You Want" download with no minimum on a few sites. On March 8th, 2013, two singles were posted from the album, including an acoustic cover of "Beg" (originally written by Evans|Blue). The singles have been made available as a Pay What You Want download on the official site and on the band's Bandcamp page and are available for streaming on several sites.
In March 2013, a music video was released for "The Worst In Me". It was the first ever official music video for The Challis Effect, filmed in Albany County, Wyoming. Brammer wrote, filmed, directed, and produced the video. An acoustic version of "You Fail Me" (the original having appeared on the debut album) was also released along with the previous two singles, in anticipation of the forthcoming album.
A portion of all TCE music and merch sales go to benefit the Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation, a charitable organization to which Brammer has been a longtime contributor.
