Malice, Dark Asylumís 2006 follow up retained the orchestral ambiance and neoclassical harmonies of The Terror Cycle and pushed the Goth-Orchestral genre into new territory. In 2004, Dark Asylum pioneered the use of EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon, also known as Paranormal Audio Recordings) into professional Haunted Attraction market.
House of Tears marks a conscious return to the Giallo and Splatter soundtracks which lie at the heart of modern horror mythos. Drawing inspiration from Fulci standard Fabio Frizzi and the various incarnations of Goblin, House of Tears elicits a nostalgic sense of horror. Loosely based on the narrative of Mark Z. Danielewski's enigmatic epic House of Leaves, Dark Asylum's House of Tears serves as a soundtrack to madness, death and paradox. While the EVP took a back seat to dynamics, House of Tears offers the most mature and engaging incarnation of Dark Asylum's efforts.
