The band is still searching for a true niche to call their own, and you can hear it in their songs. "We sound like a band trying to find themselves" vocalist Kory Malone says. "We just write whatever we think would be fun to play live. If we can encourage people who have never seen us before to dance, then we're satisfied." The bands energy remains consistent through their exploration of grind, thrash, metalcore, death, and doom, a point they are quite proud of. "We feel like if we put on a good show, that's the first step" says Wells. "The live show is where you can have fun, hear your songs realized, and give people the true representation of your band."
Guitarist Wyatt Sheer comes from a musical background that includes bands like The Smiths and The Cure. Wells can listen to jazz and death in the same sitting. Malone stays true to his hardcore roots. Bassist Tim Dutkovic's interests run the gamete from punk to doom, and drummer Zach Elenberger loves metal. This melding pot of styles has provided a rich environment for the band to craft their songs. "I think it helps the whole songwriting process" Sheer says. "Adam brings me the song, and then we deconstruct."
"A lot of time has been spent alone in my room with a guitar" Wells says. "and I'd say nine tenths of that material gets thrown out. I'm a total perfectionist." The band writes by taking Wells' song structures and making a soup out of them; everyone adding their own ideas. "Some ideas make it and some don't, but in the end we always end up with something that's different than when I brought it in, and it's always way way better" Wells adds.
The band is inspired by fellow bands in Pittsburgh, their favorite horror films, and of course, their friends. "We have a pretty close core of friends that would do just about anything for us" says Sheer, "and we make sure we give back. Friends and fans are where it all begins, and we make sure to respect that. No message ever goes unanswered."
Belie My Burial is a band poised to play an important role in the Pittsburgh hardcore scene, and they are working hard to do so. "Don't sell your friends out, play good shows, and write good songs, play plenty of Mortal Kombat and watch movies with the band." says Wells. "It's hard work."
